Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hi all, I ordered NNs from Ideal and I love them! They are now 6/7 weeks old and one is turning very red on the neck and wattles, up close to the head. I ordered pullets...but is this a rooster? The rest are still pink, no red around the head.

Although others have not had the same experience as I have, I have never had one turn pink around the neck at that age that wasn't a boy. I even had a chick that I thought was a boy from the beginning but never had the pink and it turned out to be a girl!

I spoke to my son in Kentucky just a while ago and asked if I could get 5 of the grown NN hens back that I had given him last year and he said NO!!!!

However, If I would take all 26 back, he would deliver them personally in a couple weeks, when he gets a long weekend. He tells me he likes them just fine, they are laying very well but he and his buddy have too much on their plate right now. I may wait for him to deliver and I may not...depends upon what mood my 'feets' are in this coming week...

EDIT: There are few reasons I want them back but the primary one is ...I sorta' miss them. Secondly, I want to cover some of them with these big birds that the kids have drug in. This is a secret but I've come to like the Chantecler more than I thought I would and the Buckeyes and Dark Cornish have already proven themselves to me.

I agree w/ flower, more then any other breed of chicken some red coloring in the head and neck doesn't ness mean boy. But vent sexing is not 100%. Do you have pics of the one in question (and the others)?

Glad your getting them back. Sounds like you have a plan ready to set in motion

We actually had an extra in the box, so it's possible they threw in a boy. This would make me pretty happy since after I got them I was kicking myself for not getting a rooster. I'll post some pics soon.

Oh, yes indeedy! I've been rolling a few thoughts around my head since the 'kids' got the wild hare about meat birds.

MY notion is to cover a couple NN hens each with Chantecler and Buckeye cocks and then use the get to cover these Dark Cornish hens....using NNs as toppers in every case. Can't hurt, especially if all (most) excess cockerels will be caponized for the little quasi-commercial thingy that seems to be taking root around here.

I've ordered Ariel a double set of Chinese caponizing tools. Likely could do without them and just repo. The set I gave Turk but he said he actually plans to use them. WE'll see about that and I know where they are. I suspect the tools will return here with whomever shuttles back the NN hens.

Depending upon where you got your chicks (sorta') and also how many you bought, there's more than a good chance you got a 'boy' despite the extra chick.

i might not have any fancy color like most of you. but i still love my turkens to death!
All colors of Naked Necks are special. The only ugly ones are the roosters that jump you after your turn your back. Those are really few and far between. I've just had a run of three in a row that turned out to be jumpers. Two are give and the other one kind of young decided that he's scared if me right now. Well today I got a bargain at the auction. I've added some Wlsummers. Gonna cross those into the Naked Necks. I've left 5 of the 10 hens with the Welsummer rooster for a few pure breeds to have some to sell in the September sale. Come spring if my NN hen numbers are up ill sell the Welsummers off.
