Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Don't be deceived by 'Renard'...what he can't jump, he can easily climb...I've taken them out of trees.

@Phill98 As for trying to block a chicken door with bricks...might not even bother. There are many ways that will secure a door that are far superior to a few bricks. The fox is a great digger of dens and can get around rocks and roots that are much more secure than what I reading in this.

Yep. This. When I lived in Los Angeles, saw more foxes than any other time in my life. Several times they were were up on big metal garbage dumpsters, trotting along 6 foot tall brick walls.. sleeping on roofs.. trees...

If it came to a choice of the two, I guess I'd take the Reds but if they threw in a few NHs by accident or intent, I wouldn't feel slighted because I simply have no real interest in either, not to say they don't have some good qualities but I just never saw any favorable percentage in having either breed hanging around here. Fortunately, the whole family feels the same way about them.

@Kev Ive given this some thought and not just recently. If I didn't have others to consider here, I'd only have NNs and Dark Cornish. I have become very fond of the DC's over the last couple years and can't see not having them for the rest of my life. Will certainly be crossing them with NNs on a regular basis.

Looking forward to the crosses!

I'm getting ready to put the little boy with the "cornish type" body with some of the scaleless carrier hens soon...

There seems to be a problem with your link.

OMG, they are getting so big so fast! I think they have grown half again as big as when I left the house at noon!!!!

Time to add more panels to the brooder...

That's definitely one of the potentially negative things with NNs. They seem to grow up just a bit faster than most other breeds. I've hatched some birds that don't really start perching on the edge of the brooder until 3 weeks old, but my NNs....If I can get them to wait until they're 1 1/2 weeks old then I'm lucky. Maybe it's because they're so friendly? I don't know, but those little buggers are determined to use their wings as much as possible as soon as possible after hatching.

I'm really glad to "hear" this. The DC are still at the top of my list to acquire at some point in the future, and definitely to cross with my NNs.

Right now I'm rather impatiently waiting for the eggs under my broody hen to hatch, and also enduring the prolonged wait that comes from just having put eggs in the incubator. Fortunately, our business is requiring a lot of extra time and effort from me right now, which is providing a suitable distraction and keeping me from staring at eggs most of the day.

I'm also still trying to finish up construction projects, but between the tropical depression dumping inches of rain on us these past two days and those pesky Africanized bees that FINALLY flew off....*sigh* I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now.

Hey! Has anyone else ever had a NN cockerel that wobbled it's head a lot? I swear my favorite cockerel does it just because his wattles and comb are so large, but he's the only one. I don't know if it's behavioral, or indicative of a neurological problem. ???

DC can be good... unless you get the really meaty/big ones like the show type, those do not tolerate the heat very well at all. "hatchery stock" do allright. edited- had both types btw.

How does he wobble his head? Is it like there's something annoying on his face? Many of the larger wattled(that also touches their neck) NN roos do kind of 'get this thing off my face' after drinking or eating something wet/messy. If he does it after drinking, that is probably it...

Today morning I had a little heart attack. Dogs are barking and chickens are on alert. I don't have to say what was on my mind. I ran to the coop and what I see? A frog in the coop and all chickens around her. I sometimes think that they afe playing with me. But I guess it was better to se a frog then fox.

About that fence, I was worried about her climbing over it.

Yesterday I closed the door with three bricks instead of one. I think that she can't move them.

If those bricks weigh one hundred pounds, you might be ok. If you just used an pld fashioned screen door latch with a wedge behind it...that would far more secure than a couple of bricks....trust me.

My DC's fall somewhere in between the extremes. I have 11 pullets (4 months old) and they are quite hefty, with a couple of somewhat smaller ones but even they are much heavier than they appear. I won't get rid of these but will not use any but the larger pullets for breeding.

I thought I had a couple cockerels in this batch but alas...not.
