Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I know it's not really relevant to the conversation but my NN pullet is such a good mama! She's only 6 months old herself so I'm really impressed with her. Sorry but I just had to share that with people that appreciate NNs. :-)

It's totally relevant - I would TOTALLY love a broody hen mama to do the work of brooding Naked Neck chicks for me in the future, and so am pleased to hear about instances of good NN mamas. (And yes, cute pictures are always a bonus!)

In most breeds, it's difficult to have a truly reliable broody at that age. If she raises them reasonably well, cares for and protects them...she's worth her weight in gold!!

I had to move her twice while she was setting due to unforseen circumstances and she stayed on the eggs. She would get off the eggs once or twice a day to eat and dust bathe and then go right back so she stayed in good health and weight. Anytime I put food in she calls them and drops some food for them before she eats any for herself. She warms them up whenever they need it while they're out. Her chicks are pretty calm around people because she is. The only thing I don't know is how well she will protect them with the flock. She is in an 8x8 hoop house right next to the flock now but not with them yet.
Yes, I consider her invaluable. She makes this way easier then raising them in a brooder!

Both pictures are the same two chicks. These are the only 2 that hatched Naked Necked from the Welsummer hens. Both look like they're going to be pullets. Fingers crossed.

These two shots are of the chicks from my Mottled Partridge hen.

These are the chicks from my Black Crossbred hen ( 1/2 BJG 1/4 EE 1/4 NN ). Most are a partridge color, except the one chipmunk colored one. There is one that looks partridge and barred at the same time. Is that even possible?

Be back in a bit. Phone is trying to die on me.

These two are of suspected Blue Jersey Giant chicks from Naked Neck hens. I say assumed because there were done that I had no way of separating at hatch but figure by the time they are ready for laying and breeding I'll be able to tell. The top photo is of all Splash chicks. The bottom pic is the dark ones. I thought they were all black but see some reddis-gold coming in. There was a Silver hen, a dark red hen, a blue red hen, and a golden laced hen in with him. They are the ons with no beards.

Last three shots are from my 1/2 EE and 1/2 NN hens. All were some form of wheaten based and all laid brown eggs. None of the hens spotted a beard, but they all got a beard. Some of the "beards" are just a bit if fuzz on their cheeks, I've seen this on pure NN before that were crossed to fully feathered chickens so they may actually be the BJG chicks but I'm keep them back just in case.

The chicks from the green eggs are being posted on the Green Egg Laying Naked Neck thread.

When I have lot of job to do and when I am so nervous, angry, ****** of and arguing with whole world, I just run to my chickens and just watch them. I don't do anything, just sit there and watch them doing their own stuff. That is so strange for a 17 year old boy, but as I get older I do this more and more often. My chickens are always doing right things to make me feel better and they don't even know that.

I think that's awesome! I call it "chicken therapy", and even my 16 year old son partakes in it at times when he's really stressed or depressed. There's something wonderful about the simplicity of the chicken kingdom. They all know what they are and what they're supposed to do...not politics or any of the absurdities of human life. And they're darn funny sometimes too.

Totally relevant and absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing!

And I'm loving all the chick photos. Nothing brightens the day faster than a cute little chick.

Hopefully next spring I can hatch out a few dark skinned NNs. They will be so cute! Now if I could just figure out which eggs will hatch pullets and just hatch those. LOL!
