Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Mama and chick spent their first day with the flock (chick is 3 1/2 weeks old). I know she has a hard time protecting him because of her age and rank in the flock. He was not happy this evening when I got home and fussed and hollered until she took him to bed! I think they got separated more than a few times and he found it quite stressful. They're in my front garden right now and have quite a bit of room and lot's of hiding places so he'll be fine as he learned his way around. Definitely a mama's boy though. And she is doing such a good job for a pullet - so much fun to see!

Haha yeah the chicks sure have a lot to learn and that's a sweet picture.

I am resting a horrible headache, and doing neuro checks on myself. I was helping my husband w/ an outbuilding he is building and a rafter dropped on my head. It didn't knock me out, but I saw stars.

This is my girl, guessed to be around 3 months, although I have no idea how old she really is or any past information about her as she was given to me, she's my first N.N. and now I'm hooked, I can't wait till spring to get more, she's friendly, and likes to sit on top of the smaller coop we have, she likes to give my little barred rock roo a hard time, I had never heard of them until she was offered to me, she is super friendly and lets me catch her, I don't think she really enjoys the love but she tolerates me doing it.

That is so precious! Seeing mamas and chicks like this just warms my heart. When I'm having a bad day I sneak out to my cabin and watch my mama hen White Rock and her five NN babies. Their relationship is so pure, simple and beautiful that the stresses of the day just melt away.

I second that welcome! (Well said @draye ). This really is an incredibly under-appreciated breed. Their personalities are fantastic, their health and hardiness is beyond impressive, their egg production is good...and I must say, their meat and skin taste fantastic!

The only thing there are some that fall on the smaller side of large fowl. I'm not talking about the bantams here mind you.

The smaller hens that I have I'm trying to get bred up to a little larger size. I like them, the hens, to be just a bit over APA size.
Most of my roosters fall into the right weight size according to the APA. Albeit usually on their second year of age. I think this is fairly normal time period though for most large fowl.

Do they have a tendency to go broody? If not all just put them in the bator but was hoping to get some the easy way lol and thank you all for the welcome! I need to get a N.N. rooster eventually, but for now (being October in Missouri) I'll have to hold off, and that she isn't even laying yet, that could hold me up a few more months, but if she has a possibility of brooding her own, I'd much prefer that!

I have limited experience but I impulsively bought 3 NN pullets this spring. One of them went broody very soon after she started laying and hatched a couple eggs by the time she was 6 months. I didn't let her hatch her own eggs but put a few Silkie X green eggs layer eggs under her. She's been a good mama and is the pullet I posted pics of previously.

Some do go broody and done don't. It all depends on what line they come from.

I've had thre that had tried to go broody for me, but I've got no place for broodies so I had to break them up.
