Naked Neck/Turken Thread

*Chuckle* I have an empty pen right now...so empty....I think it needs chickens in it....there's still plenty of breeds and breeding mixes I haven't tried....aaaahhhhh, chicken math!

I don't have an empty pen but I want new breeds and crosses, lol. I am going for marans, araucanas, EEs and OEs - NNs are in EEs project! I would love a rumpless naked neck!

Ok guys so here my chickens get to free range. You can also see the run I was talking about again, it's 5m*8m or 17*26ft. Fence is around 7 ft tall.

@chickengr you said one square meter for one bird. In that case I could keep 40 chickens in here. I think that is too much for this coop. Don't you think so?

I agree it is too much, I mentioned that just to let you know that anything more than 1 m2/bird is ok. I have about 2 m2 per bird in my run and my coop is small (it is for sleeping only). I put old car tyres in the corner of the run and they usually gather there so the run looks empty. I have those tyres for wet and cold days.

I cannot see in the pic if they have some shelter (for sunshine/snow). nice green grass, I envy you! in place where I live some greens have just started to show up. I go to the abandoned fields with a big bag to collect some greens, mostly oxalis.

They have shelter in side of the run. It's about 2*2m, but I need to re-build it, it's very old. They usually don't stay in center of my property, since they don't have where to hide. In the sides of property as you can see they have trees and bushes where they can hide, especialy in the corner where I'm standing while taking this picture. We planted some fruits in the center, right behind the garden, but they are still smal-we planted them two years ago.

About grass, everybody here has it. It's not growing anymore so we don't have to cut it.
But we have it every year and it never dies.

it is a lovely place. if I were you I would put some things where they can hide. if you google a bit you will find some creative ideas.here is one I found (possibly on byc):

and this is what I made this summer:

I usually calculate the number of chickens based on the "rule of thumb" as you mentioned, and then either halve the number of chickens in that calculation, or double the space.

I think chickens are happiest when they have more room to range, but actually seem pretty content with small, cozy houses to sleep in at night. It never ceases to amuse me how all of the chickens will crown together on a single roost, packed against one another like sardines, even though I'll have provided so much more roosting space for them. Silly birds, LOL.

Did I see an aquaponics garden in the background of one of those photos?

I acrually have already draw the shelter I'm going to build, but I will build it in spring. They already have shelter, but I think that is too low, I want it to be higher. I will do it in spring 'cause I don't want to do anything outside in mud. I will be planting some fruits and berries in the coop later this fall but that's all for this year.

I also find that chockens are happier in bigger space. Me and my neighbour have almost the same size pen, but he has 25 chickens in it. Way too much for that space I'd say.

OK, so I am bouncing around between threads - my apologies for any randomness/strangeness in my questions, but...

I was liking the idea of raising Silkies for meat for the black flesh/bones/skin, etc. I was searching around for info on larger Silkies, and then based on a comment someone made on a thread about large Silkies, I realized that perhaps the same thing could be accomplished, with larger chickens, by working with the fibromelanotic trait in NNs (which I don't know a lot about). Is this a clear-thinking idea? (I am assuming that the taste would be similar between Fm birds and Silkies - is that correct?)

If that's the case, then I'd prefer to have a group of big Fm Naked Necks to work on than little Silkies. Any comments or suggestions from you guys who have these birds in your flocks, including how to enhance and select for it if it is indeed the same? If it is different, maybe I'll look into Silkies after all, and get sucked into the Show Girl vortex......

Oh, this is brilliant, and I have access to pallets. I'm totally building this, especially as the primary threat is aerial predators (hawks and owls)...
