Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hi Dahlila! Congratulations on your new chicks! I'd guess your new Naked Necks will be buffs or at least buff-ish.
They'll probably look similar to these girls, buff NN.

I have a question about the breeding of the naked necks. I know that when most chickens mate the rooster will grab ahold of the feathers on the back of the neck to help balance themselves. What happens with the naked neck hen.?? Seeing as they have no feathers there do they just grab the skin?? And does that not turn into a sore place easily??
Thanks,
Tammy

Yes they grab the skin. If there's a proper rooster ratio, there usually is not anything noticeable on their necks from this.

Young pullets do sometimes get owies, especially if they are with cockerels who are learning to mate and over-enthusiastic they sometimes injure their necks, but they heal extremely well. The skin is also thinner on young birds.. the skin gets thicker and tougher as they mature.

That's a good question. My roosters haven't yet broken the hens skin on their necks when they're mating. I can't say enough good things about my NN/Turkens. They did fine during the cold weather, they bear confinement well in my small-ish coop, they're aren't flighty, the roosters aren't overly loud, etc. The Turkens I have are mixes, but I do have some "pure bred" NN eggs coming to hatch. Can't wait!!! I do have some of my own eggs in my bator right now, and so far I have 2 pips... This waiting is killing me!!

Thanks for the info on the nn's skin. Hopefully with 1 roo and 6 gals it won't be to much of a problem. I had told my husband that I wondered if they used the tufts of feathers on their heads as the necks were bald. Here are a couple pics of my new nn's. I had ordered 6 pullets and a roo, but they sent me 8 nn's so I don't know what the extra will turn out to be. They are a little over 2 weeks now and some wing feathers and tail sprouts are starting. Looks like there are going to be lots of different colors. I don't think any two are going to be the same. Several of them are camera shy and tend to hide. LOL
