Naked Neck/Turken Thread

thank you.
so what feed do roos need? I don't feed them laying pellets but whole corn, fermented wheat, wheat bran, sometimes boiled eggs, greens and they catch bugs, etc. they have egg shells and marble powder for calcium free choice.

the breeder that gave me marans eggs does not have fertility issue. I think it is about my broody. one morning she got up and could not find the way back. but she stayed away from the nest 20-40 minutes only, possibly not more than 30. the temperature was about 57f. all the other days she stayed out for 15-20 minutes and the temperature was higher than 64f. the last 2-3 days she was out for max 5 minutes.

I can only offer a comparison via my own broody. The only time I saw her leave the nest for longer than 5 minutes was when our daytime temps reached 100ºF. That day she was off the nest for a little over 10 minutes while she drank A LOT of cool water, dust bathed, and gulped down more food than usual. Most days I would time her as she ran through her routine in roughly 3 minutes and was back on her egg, and the last two days of incubation when the eggs began to hatch I never saw her leave at all. I made sure there was food and water in her pen so she didn't have to go outside, so she could've popped off the nest briefly, but I didn't see her come outside at all. So I suspect that Draye is right and your broody simply hasn't perfected her skills yet.

Perhaps he had cirrhosis of the liver...after a lifetime of FF...Just kidding, sorta. I'm sure my goats and horses (and cattle , before I sold them) seemed to catch a buzz when fed silage/haylage but they were fed it on a limited basis.

Who knows...I just wonder about about the long-term effects of 'stuff' we feed.

Interesting question.

A drunk chicken is a happy chicken? LOL!

I feed my chickens soaked or fermented feed too and haven't seen any liver problems in my culls, but they're also been pretty young when I butchered them. Now I'm curious....so as I cull older roosters I'll be checking for this. We are what we eat, and so are chickens.

I think hellbender was joking, however in order to make etoh you have to add much sugar, or sprout grains prior to fermenting, have an airlock fermenter. Others have checked the ferment w/ hydrometers and found no etoh or extremely minimal etoh

Sounds like he is getting what he needs. Mine doesn't get all that because he's in the run with the hens all the time. I do try to get them done grass when I have it available. Even in the spring I don't have much grass in my yard, just a lot of weeds. I also when I can get it feed some grain mix but it isn't always available.

It is sounding like to me the broody may still have some learning to do about setting.

Here are the boys I have saved This is Pie, he is some form of barred, some have thought maybe some mottling too, he is definitely the head boy, by his own decree! lol (I can tell by his comb he descends from my birds that have houdan heritage, so mottling is a possibility) I need to come up w/ a name for this boy, he has matured slower, but his dark skin has remained the darkest of any boy I've ever had. (the fm boys tend to lighten quite a bit as they mature)
I think Shadow would fit him right, because he is black and he isn't the head roo

There's a lot of truth in this. Much of the food in this country at least has been stripped of much of its nutritional value. That said, I would rather give my chickens free access to kelp than put iodine in their water. Just my personal preference, but it seems more natural and less likely to result in an overdose.

I wish I had free access to kelp or anything else. If I find kelp at all in some food store the price is too high to feed chickens with it.

a lot of weeds are beneficial to the chickens.

my broody is 1 yo, was broody 2x. I hope she will improve. her sister didn't hatch any. ok, it was too hot and she wasn't getting out from the nest so she was pooping on the eggs.

I can't resist posting another picture if this dude. He's so pretty:
400

Don't really know what color to call him.
He does have a birchenish pattern to him.

Went through all the chicks today. The cockerels are looking pretty good.

The pullets are doing great also. The only thing is I thought I had 17 pullets. Well one was a suspect, and today I got it confirmed it was a late developing cockerel. Then as I was looking over the black ones found another late developing cockerel. Had to cull him though for various reasons. So this left me with 15 pullets but then I sold I've if those.
Someone called me the other day when I posted pictures of then on FB, they just had to have one of the Splash pullets. I got pretty good money for a 13 week old pullet. So now I'm down to 13 pullets.

Good thing I'm going to set in Christmas Day. Got yo have more pullets.

So now tell me again how the witching thing works on sexing the eggs that was discussed on the BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION.......................................thread.
