Naked Neck/Turken Thread

A cold snap is coming for a few days it will be in the teens overnight and 30's in the day highs. The onsies the nakeds were in didn't have any or much wing coverage, so I went and got onsies w/ long sleeves and modified the sleeves to better fit the wings for wing sleeves and so they wouldn't be long enough to drag and get wet. Now they all have fresh new onsies w/ sleeves on under the wool sweaters. Rudy seems to mind the cold more then the others, he was the most chilled under his clothes. I had been cutting the sleeves off and making pants w/ the sleeves, but the wool sweaters seem to cover the outer thighs well enough to forgo the pants. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck. I've noticed a similar thing, a particular bird minding the cold more than the others.. and there's even one that acts like it isn't cold at all. There was frost on the ground this morning and several times last couple weeks.

I'm glad I stayed home most of the morning. About 30 minutes after the boys were let out in their new paddock, I was back inside with my coffee, and I heard Snape's crow coming from what was now the WRONG part of the property. Sure enough, when I headed out, Tank and Apoc were in their new paddock, but Snape had gotten out and was pacing the outside of the NN paddock fence, with the girls seemingly very happy to see him (they were very nervous this AM with no male protection). Still not sure how he got out, but he must have been very determined to get back to his girls.

So, given that the injury yesterday was almost the only real time I've seen him behave like that (vs. Tank the randy one), and thinking it may have happened due to Tank's presence, I decided to let Snape back in with the girls on his own (as if I could keep him out!). Of course, this involved about 30 minutes of slow chase and ultimately, a fishing net, but once he was back in, both he and the girls were happier. And he was a gentleman - some dancing, but when the girls weren't interested, he didn't push it further. And Tank and Apoc were calmly browsing in their new area. All was well...

Until 5pm. What on earth is it about the evening that turns them into monsters? Tank escaped and started wandering near the legbar pen (really upsetting Dumbledore) - had to lock him and Apoc up early. Then I sat and watched the NNs - and sure enough - Snape started being a real jerk again. It's almost like it's last call in a bar and he's desperate to score with ANYONE at any cost.

So he got chased off by me a few times before I managed to corner him and pick him up. Then he sat in my lap in what was essentially a firm but loving papoose hold - I made it clear, in a gentle but firm way, that I was bigger than him, I was boss, and I was always going to win, so he'd better just settle down (I've been through this with cats at medication time. It works well.). He got it pretty quick. So he very calmly sat in my lap in "time out" papoose hug for the rest of the evening until the girls began putting themselves to bed and he started drowsing off in my arms - then I put him to bed.

WHAT a pain!!!! I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with these boys - short of sticking Snape in a dog crate for a couple days and slapping together another structure. I think until I can get him back out of of the flock I'll just do the evening time out thing. Geez...

This is my Turken boy, He's awesome!

People talk about aprons to protect the backs of fully feathered girls from injury due to overattentive boys - does anyone have a little protective helmet for NN pullets? I'm thinking it would look like a little woolie cap with ear flaps...

@Kassaundra , what do you think?

I'm thinking a sock w/ the heel cut out for the face and the toe for the comb / head area and the long part of the sock for a neck warmer! lol

Yep...very determined boys. I can't even tell you how many early evenings I spent sitting on blocks with all of my NN pullets perched on my arms, legs, shoulders, head...all in an attempt to escape those pesky boys. Even now I frequently have to rescue some of my girls from all the amorous cockerels pulling their Jekyl & Hyde act.

mine become monsters mornings and evenings. for the rest of the day they are calm except at feeding time. but with them chasing each other I think very few eggs will be fertile.

Things seem to be settling down a teeny bit, Tank and Apoc doing ok - though I think I will still try to give the girls a break from Snape once the coop is finished. He got the papoose hold again this evening - and the tough guy secretly likes being held and having his face stroked.

And yes, he has an AMAZING body type. Interestingly, I put Tank and Apoc to bed (still haven't taken on their digs as "home" yet), and Tank seems less blocky now - I haven't weighed them in a bit, but plan to next week. I need to check that he's eating - maybe it was just stressful with Snape there for a while, plus the move. Meanwhile, I think he misses the girls, as he keeps tid-bitting to nobody (poor guy) - though he also had a cackling contest with Paula the LOUD cream legbar (who aspires to a career in opera or punk rock) - you would have sworn he was a hen about to lay if you didn't know better. Crazy kids...

Before that, I took a look at Trinity's wound (it's a big 'un, so glad she has dark skin), and I tried putting a bunch of Peck-No-More on it to be safe (caught one of the other pullets pecking at it a little). Here's a tip: If you hold a bird in your lap and put Peck-No-More or Blu-Kote on the back of her head, SHE WILL SHAKE HER HEAD VIGOROUSLY. No matter how often you try. So, if you're having a problem with your friends and co-workers pecking at your face and neck, it might be a benefit as you will get a very nice coating, otherwise, not so much. Then again, it's a chance to try out that facial tattoo you always wanted. Too bad you can't pick the pattern...

Got a little done on the coop today, will do more tomorrow. I'm MOTIVATED now!!!!!
