Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Here they are: http://www.idealpoultry.com/item.html

I just got mine last week so they should still have them in stock.

Oh, sorry, I can't link the specific item. They are listed under Standard Brown Egg Layers. Just follow the link that says Naked Necks.

Thanks. I was looking under meat birds. On my phone so I don't see many options at one time. And all so small. :lau

I agree he's a Birchen. Don't be afraid to cross him over his mom, linebreeding is used pretty often and can give great results.

Thanks! That's definitely the plan. I'll be handing over my best layers to him, including his mama and aunts.

It would give you some diversity. I also have some Murray McMurray bloodlines mixed into mine. I've never gotten NN from Ideal.
I've had two bad experiences with Ideal so I don't use them and do not recommend them.

Draye one more question if I may. At what age did the nn from Cackle start laying?
My Orpington's were hatched 4-7-15 and out of 6 hens I get 1-2 every other day. Part may be my fault as they were in a pen that got little sun light. Have now been moved to a warmer more sunlight area. Hoping for much better performance now. Ive never really been happy with this line as I think they were more for show not even sure now if they are that good for show either

Some pics from today of the honorary NN and one of my favorite pullets from this year, she hasn't started laying yet but when she does she is earmarked for a breeding area w/ Vader. (Gary named him) the dark fm birchen boy.

I just love the look of this girl, the white, and the beard and the fm

I call him Skitzo, he is the skitziest chicken ever

I've been around, just a bad week, had a bad reaction to a new asthma med.

Oh, hope you're fine now.

And that white girl. I can see why she is a favourite. There are just no words to describe her. Even tought I like all of your chickens, I really love her, Darth and I loved Yeta and Audra the most. And Q-tip made me like barred chickens.

What is the white girl's name?

Good to know! So does the presence of blue always equate to "splash"? I'm still wrapping my brain around how this color genetics works.

No worries, please feel free to ask anything here.

Let's see if this helps:

nn - Nn - NN (nn being normal neck)

black - blue - splash

Black is "no blue" just like nn is "no naked neck".

Blue is one dose, same as Nn- big bowtie/bib.

Splash is two doses, same as NN - tiny bowtie or totally clean neck.

It's the same idea of two doses of the gene has 'stronger, more effect' on the bird. NN is more naked than Nn, splash is "more blue(actually diluted" than blue.

The other thing about blue... it primarily affects black pigments and has minimal effects on red/gold pigments.

So.. a solid blue or a "solid splash" are really solid black chickens with one dose of blue and two doses of blue, respectively.

On color patterns like a black tail buff, only the black tail(and any other black details) get turned to blue or "splashed" while the red/buff is usually either totally or only slightly unaffected. That's how the parents of your bird came to get their grey tails.. and since both parents had blue, there was potential for splashes(double dose of blue) just like two Nn parents have the potential to produce NN.
