And that white girl. I can see why she is a favourite. There are just no words to describe her. Even tought I like all of your chickens, I really love her, Darth and I loved Yeta and Audra the most. And Q-tip made me like barred chickens.

What is the white girl's name?

Oh interesting and thanks for the weights..... I'm wondering if the stock has started to drift towards layer type as 20 yrs ago they were averaging 8 for roosters, 6 for hens. Perhaps they will gain some more as they fill out over this year, though? I never weighed the pullets/cockerels...

btw I am noticing the hatchery NN chicks I picked up from feed store last fall are also looking 'small' (for hatchery stock) to me- another reason I'm wondering about the drift in apparent traits...

I suspect any NN from a hatchery has been headed toward egg production. I got some smaller ones in this group as well you know - and culled them. I'll be working my way toward larger stock.

The two together do look like a boy/girl pair by the size difference.. but maybe it's variation as many broiler stock will throw very varying weights if crossed with non-broilers.

However the dark feathers coming on the bigger one's breasts do seem to be early rooster colors coming in... I'm guessing they may be wheaten or like Apoc.

BTW, Apoc is a houdini and has gone on walkabout every day this week, trying to get to the Cream Legbar girls (which he thinks are SO SEXY!). Have you been PM'ing him behind my back and telling him about that cross?

Haha! you're going to develop stunning NN with the Hamps! Wyandottes for breed variety or.. crossing?

I know, right?! Those German NHs are huge! The RLBW are mostly because they're so PRETTY!!!!!! But yes, I'd like to try a cross. Remember the photo of the NN RLBW on here a bit ago? (I forget whose it was)? What would be the best NN color/pattern to cross to get a NN with the most RLBW-type pattern?

I'll have to check them tonight as the phone says they can't ship till may 2 I assuming my order amount of 15 was the problem. Just trying to price them

They are quite popular and sell out. I went on a waiting list for Fall 2016 initially - but got a surprise call that they were available Fall 2015! So I cancelled the Cx order and here I am...

And I know Draye had a bad experience with Ideal, but lots of us have also had very good experiences with Ideal, and I got my NNs from Ideal based on good reviews of their NNs. Draye warned me about Ideal being no good as a source for NNs, then later asked where I got my great birds from...

. (Just teasing you, draye...) Hatchery stock is hatchery stock - I knew I would need to do some flock building, and I'm getting some tasty dinners along the way.

Now S&G apparently has MONSTER big NNs. A number of us would LOVE to get our hands on some of their NNs (which they sell as broilers). But their minimum chick order is 100 chicks.

Draye one more question if I may. At what age did the nn from Cackle start laying?
My Orpington's were hatched 4-7-15 and out of 6 hens I get 1-2 every other day. Part may be my fault as they were in a pen that got little sun light. Have now been moved to a warmer more sunlight area. Hoping for much better performance now. Ive never really been happy with this line as I think they were more for show not even sure now if they are that good for show either

That has been so long ago, but I think like the majority of my flock, somewhere between 23 to 26 weeks. Frankly I like them starting around that age myself, I think they tend to lay longer than the ones ( sex links mostly) that start 5 months and a few at 4 1/2 months old that that Kay out pretty quickly.

Hey good birds are good birds no matter where they come from.
I'm really glad that you've have good experience with Ideal, I really am.

I'm planning on a NN order probably next year if things go right , (Cackle) seeing if I can get more of those mottled birds. To it won't hurt to get more if the red/buff birds slso. That is if I can't get eggs from someone close.

I also want to add @Fire Ant Farm. Go project on those NN. You'll have a lot of fun with that.

Projects are what keeps me going with my chickens.

Well I'm off Thursday that will be a good time that morning to move the babies to the brooder, that's right so far out of the last 18 I set, 13 were good, and do far 11 have hatched. I'll wait until Thursday morning to turn off the incubator. That is until I get ready for the Easter Hatch-A-Long. That's not too far off.

Wow 100 too bad everyone isn't closer we could share. Cackle chicks are available on February 8 for now. Ideal on 5-2 for now. S&G shows sold out. Sent them an email just out of curiosity.

I'm finally getting eggs starting back up. Not the Orpington's though. Maybe I'm expecting too much from them. All I read was 6-8 months for eggs and they love the months of October to March to lay. Well they missed the memo. Right now they are 9 months pushing 10 on the 7 of February. The Trader Joe hens are starting now even they are older than they were supposed to start. Hatched 8-9-15. Liking them. 7 eggs 3 hens 4 days not a bad late start.

Now that you have got my interest in the fountain pens I've looked them up at Woodcrafters and while the kits are a little more than the ball points it's doable.

Yeah but now I cringe about the times I spoke of hatchery stock NN retaining the meat part of dual purpose more than other hatchery breeds...

I know this really sounds like 'in the good old days.....' the hatchery NN were coming out heavier back then. Still decent/good layers but very meaty, it was obvious handling a NN vs a barred rock or RIR. So far the pullets are looking to grow out smaller than my largefowl "NN mutts"..

Definitely keep Snape to bring the weights back up.

Any of your NN besides Snape would be a good cross for a start on the blr pattern. Give a preference to the darker red birds if possible if you're not interested in gold laces. The dark red needs several genes that encourage more and deeper red pigments.

btw three of them came from a scsc roo- totally natural breeding! and either a hen with no signs on leg and one hen with just a small patch by the hock joint.

The fourth one is either from carrier parents or the one scsc roo in that pen- two roosters, something like 20 hens.
