Naked Neck/Turken Thread

No problem on the math for pens. I need to dust off the equipment anyways. Besides it will give me excuse to visit a friend who does the foundation pens as well as lots of other turned crafts.
Your right on not really knowing the outcome of S&G chicks. It sounds like your group still has the large blood surviving.
I was just looking at a "good breeder of NNs" site. Golly, they can get "up to 6 pounds"! Stock was pretty small. Likely had been selected more for eggs somewhere along the road. I am hoping to get my boys to be consistently bigger than that... You've probably noticed that we cross our NNs freely all over the place - I'll pick something even bigger to cross with them, like maybe the German New Hampshires...

I was actually really considering exactly this. Unfortunately, I'm not really able to handle that many chickens at any stage of life, even if the majority were culled early. Maybe one day...

I am sorry I am too far to give you some eggs. my NN girl is the biggest bird I have. I think she will be 5,5-6 kg (12-13 lb). she is a good layer too (4-5 jumbo eggs/wk).

I just saw the strangest thing. One of last year's hens stood on the roost in the coop all by herself. First thouht, she is sick. When I went to pick her up to check her, she made the broody sound and at the moment she made it, the egg dropps down. And that was not the strange part. Egg was rolling all the way to the other side of the RUN androoster started chasing it.

And I don't know why she was laying on the roost, I saw her before laying in the nest box and I can actually tell her egg from the bunch.

watch her, she probably is sick and cannot control laying eggs. happened to my hen. if it is too cold put some cayenne pepper in their feed or water. also a clove of garlic and 1 teaspoon of vinegar in 2l of water. that should help if it is not something more serious.

good luck

I already put vinegar and garlic, but she acted normal and is acting normal, although I know how good chickens can hide their illness.

good. it can be that she is not dealing well with winter. although I live in a warm climate I put hot pepper in their feed in winter. that helps them to warm up. it is never too cold here but day temperature can be 15-20 degrees higher than night temperature and that is when my chickens get sick.
