Naked Neck/Turken Thread

The desert definitely has a beauty all its own. And pretty much everything out here is trying to kill you. Nearly every plant in the desert has spikes or thorns or is poisonous. The very earth out here has killed people and pets because of a spore that leads to a disease called "Valley Fever". It's a very hostile environment, but I absolutely love it.
Texas is like that. Everything has thorns or stings...
Grass is here all year round. It never goes away, but it stops to grow somewhere in October so we don't have to cut it.

Chickens love it, and actually go to our neighbours lots, and the neighbours don't mind, so they have more then enough space.

I don't know what am I going to do when we start a garden. It wasn't problem until this year, sinve we had just a few chickens and they could be closed in run the whole time. Actually, the run was covered in grass just like
part of the yard you can see in a photo. Now, it's just mud. We tried to keep them in last week for a few hours when we were busy in the morning. Can you guess what they did? Jumped out. Of course.
I have some chickens (Tank and Speckled Sussex) that fly way too well and think it's just hysterical that I attempt to keep them in an enclosure. I can hear them every night, "Nya Nya na Nyah Nyah...." as I bodily put them back inside...

Last I heard, Nile is not allowed but Mozambique and blue were still allowed.. I see a lot of ads for the last two species.
Here in Texas, we are only allowed Mozambique.
Then you definitely need to visit this little corner of the world. We've been enjoying record high temperatures this week and last week. It's supposed to hit 90ºF today with very low humidity. We've all been wearing T-shirts, shorts and flip flops.

It's not 90F yet, but it's way too hot right now. You'd think it would be nice, but mostly it's weird. The shade for the summer for the coops is provided by a deciduous tree (no leaves currently). It's a little warm in there...

Don't know what chollas are, and can't find translate to that
They are EVIL!!! I have a very vivid memory of one being removed from my knee - WITH A PAIR OF PLIERS!!!!

One of my Bielefelder/Silkie mixes, Jordi, keeps flying out of the bachelor pad....not that I blame him. Some of those boys are getting rather mean tempered and I find that I have to cull some of them a bit more quickly than my time constraints allow. It's funny every time Jordi escapes because he spends most of his time patrolling the outdoor pen to the bachelor pad trying to figure out how to get back in. I'll open the door for him, he'll walk in of his own accord, and five minutes later I'll see him fly out again as one of the most aggressive cockerels begins chasing him. Then, once it's dark, I'll pick him up off the porch of the cabin and put him back in his pen without incident. Silly chickens!

I had that start happening when I had Tank and Apoc together (Apoc is bigger, but Tank was just BEATING on him.) Tank would wait until I released them into the paddock, and then the chase would begin - once Apoc came running out, Tank right behind him, and Apoc immediately flew over the fence and right at my head!!!! And yes, he would always then look for a way back in. Apoc is in "solitary" right now (in a tractor) - when I was removing him, I sang Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" to him, to help him understand how dysfunctional his relationship with Tank had become.

He's actually not even roaming in a paddock because he's too good at getting out and riling up the other chicken through fences/hardware cloth. This is because he has decided that the cream legbars (Dumbledore's girls) should be HIS, and he's over twice the size of Dumbledore. I do NOT want him getting out and challenging Little D. I need to work on putting up better paddock fencing and then it should get better.

Now, Tank is on his own, and his paddock is such that he gets to watch the SSs all day. He is happy to stay in his paddock until bed time. Then he escapes to roost on top of the little SS's roof. It all started when one of the SSs got out (they CONSTANTLY get out) and I was late putting them all to bed (during my first hatch). He kept her company that night and watched over her until I made it out there:

EVERY SINGLE NIGHT since then he tries to sleep on top of their coop - perhaps to watch over them? I'd let him, but I really don't want an owl to eat him overnight (they nest in my yard) - or a raccoon, or skunk, or..... So I move him by hand EVERY NIGHT.

It is sort of sweet... Gotta get their pen built so they can be a happy little spotty family.

Guys, I'm excited and nervous. I have 12 "possible" aloha Naked Neck eggs in lock down in the incubator right now, hatch due tomorrow or Friday. I say "possible" because I got them early (before surety of other rooster's influence, so some possible mixes in there) - I was working with aloha chickens to do a shipping test/fertility test before the eBay auctions. It was good that we did - the post office did a HORRIBLE number on them (and she adjusted both packaging and handling options). But these ones have survived so far (though with weird air cells). Here's hoping it goes well and I get at least some normal healthy NN chicks!!!

(In other news - I just lost one of my favorite Cream Legbar pullets yesterday, Paula - I opened her up, she was full of tumors. I'm sending samples to the lab later this week for Mareks vs Avian Leukosis virus testing...

sorry for your loss

why does it always happen to the favourite ones? RIP paula

I think one of the generic names is Teddy Bear Cactus.  The do look warm and fuzzy but get closer than two feet and you'll feel as if you have been attacked by twelve porcupine :somad

That's the reason I would try to touch it. They look so soft and fuzzy.

I have one escape artist and the ones that escape in less smart way. One of my Nn girls walks on vertical fence/wire. I have never seen something like that until this Monday. She does it with sucjh an elegance and effortless. Others just jump and fly over two meters high fence.

And @Fire Ant Farm story about Tank and SS is great. So, why don't you let them be together? Sorry for the loss and hope that you get lot of chicks. When should they hatch?

At least Paula isn't suffering. It's so hard to tell with our animals when they're unwell. They simply don't whimper and complain as much as we humans do. I'm so sorry for your loss.

But.....

Here's to hoping for an outstanding hatch! Aloha chickens are so cool! Since the woman who started the breed lives just one town north of me I've seriously been thinking about adding them to my flock too. My huge...ever growing...I wonder if I can handle a couple more dozen chickens flock.
