Naked Neck/Turken Thread

@DesertChic

I'm finally getting me some whites going. Those two pullets above will be 5 weeks old on 5/8/2016.

I also have a black cockerel ( I think anyway)

I think I'm going to keep and put him in with those two white pullets. I'll also add anymore that I get from this hatch I'm setting on the 8th.
@Kev, told me that the black could help the whites along. Said also that a barred bird could help it. I'm just trying to avoid anymore barring right now. I'll see how the black works first.

Not sure.. what color were Rue's parents?

She is pretty black, I would say safe to expect some black hens, some with a small bit of color. I cannot tell if there would be any females with "lacing"(the hen version of highly colored roo).

Cockerels most likely would be as colored as Pepper or less.

It's because I don't know which kind of 'black' both of them have- birchen or extended black. Rue does have the extra genes that help reduce coloring on both kind of blacks that is why I am not really saying much about the possibility of even more colored birds from them.

Rue would be really good for all-white project though, by breeding with the white rocks.

p.s. glad Rue is recovering! and take care of yourself.. hope you get lots of help from the housemates next couple weeks.

Heisenberg is Rue's dad:

And Duckie is her mom, though she somehow managed NOT to get Duckie's feathered shanks.

I don't have any White Rock cockerels, but I do have a dozen Austra-white cockerels I purchased for my caponizing project. Would one of those work? I'm not familiar with the breed.

Oh, and my guys are awesome and trying like anything to keep me from over-doing it. I'm the stubborn one.

It's hard because I feel 1000X better as a result of the surgery and have more energy now than I did when a decade younger, but these medical restrictions are driving me batty. I'm lousy at doing nothing.

Yeah, I've got barring all over the place. I don't mind it so much when buff or red on the NNs, but I just don't like black/white barring on NNs. Just not my thing, even though my little barred NN, Finnig, is very sweet.

barring is good for getting clear white or yellow legs in whites. If that is not important then barring is not necessary.. but if it IS important then you do want it and are using black chickens under the white.

Rather unusual for a solid black pullet from this pair. Nothing to totally rule it out though.. perhaps she will show some more color later. It makes me suspect Rue is extended black rather than birchen- extended black naturally have less color than birchen.. Pepper looks more birchen-y to me so you might be in luck.

Oh yeah.. austra whites are australorp crossed with white leghorns. That would be an excellent way to introduce dominant white into your flock.. If Rue stays solid black, then her bred with austra white cockerel would give you half cream chicks, half black chicks. The cream chicks can either grow up solid white, white with black flecks, just like the austra whites.

I feel you. I'm moderately hyper and just cannot stay still for long... when I wasnt able to walk for several months with part of it being basically bed ridden it was torture.. Glad the others are helping you though, that's really nice.

Yup, he's the one. Do ypu still have him? He looks like he has some fm in him, his neck and head are very dark red, at least I see them darker.

Yes, still have him and Vader, Pie may have some fm, I don't remember when he was small, and a lot of times they show more as chicks and lose it as they get older. They usually will keep some "freckles" on their body, but it is hard to see unless you pluck them.

Trying to psych myself up for bird processing. It is illegal to do in my city, so I'm not going to be doing it myself.. not that I could, tbh.. but I found a processor nearby (which is apparently the best place locally, but also not for the feint of heart) and I've got 5 broodies on LF eggs. Since they're all from my scaleless project I'm going to be really reluctant to let extra roosters go to anyone willy-nilly. I want to make sure I'm being responsible with this gene since it poses ethical questions considering the extra husbandry, I don't want people getting birds off me to try and make a quick buck or have a novelty bird they let die exposed to the elements, you know? So any boys not kept for breeding are gonna get butchered, probably.

I've only been raising serama up until now. This is very new to me. Gonna be agonizing over it for months, I'm sure. That and I have to find a chest freezer.. hoo boy I hope I have the guts to actually do this cuz if I can't go through with it I'm going vegetarian. Well, no. I'm going no-more-chicken-itarian. Then no more breeding for me because I'd not be cut out for it.

That said!! It will be cool to hatch my own naked necks from all sorts of mixes, since my barred rock went and sat on eggs she'd been hiding from who knows who. So it won't just be my scaleless splits.

Hi folks!

I looked at my four-week-old NN this morning and though "uh oh". These were vent sexed as pullets, so I was feeling somewhat confident I had girls.

Are NN pullets prone to reddening early? These are the first of this breed for me.

(Having trouble with attaching my photos)
