Naked Neck/Turken Thread

once a week we have a market. if I go there late, at about 2 pm I can find veggies at reduced price or even free. my vegetable garden is a disaster with this heat.

I am going to chop some bacon for my teenagers tomorrow. they again started to peck my blind brahma hen, poor girl's feet were bleeding. I am not sure if it is due to the lack of protein or they have just been nasty. I give them boiled eggs, so they should be fine. they don't peck other birds, just the blind one. I keep her outside during the day and put her in the coop with the teenagers at night only. I tried the other coops as well but all the bitches peck her beautiful feathery feet. my last hope is to put her with buff orpington and the other 2 mutts who at least at the moment don't bother her. the orpington pullet is stiil young but I hope she will be nice as my buff orpington roo is a sweetheart.

They are probably silkie crosses and the one that isn't naked neck doesn't even carry that gene. So if you breed him/her with other non- naked neck birds you can't get another naked neck.

And if you don't know- straight run means that birds that you got are not sexed, so they might turn up being males or females.

Thanks for the info on breeding Phil98. I don't usually get straight run, but my husband bid on them when I was out of the arena. It's hard to tell, but I think 2 may be little roos. That's ok though. We were at the auction to sell excess roosters and 5 red sex link hens (they were meanies). Luckily they went VERY well, and we talked to the young lady that purchased them.

I think the two with naked necks are roos and the feathered neck is pullet. Time will tell. They have taken to my Sultans, and seem to have similar personalities.

Yep, you most likely got the Showgirls, it will take another cross to the Silkies to get a true Showgirl though.

I don't know that I'll get true "silkied" Silkies. I would love some, but I don't know how well they would do with the mixed flock I have extablished. I would have to do my homework on that first.. Just seems like they wouldn't fit in well with a large size mixed flock. I don't even know if they can fly! I could be wrong though, my sultans do just fine. I am clearing out some of my more aggressive hens and plan on staying with more docile breeds while still producing a good amount of eggs and possibly some meat birds in the future.

A lot of silkies(the breed but also a lot of short legged/crested mixes with silky feathering) either never learn to roost off ground or roost really low to the ground, especially if they were brooder raised or raised by floor sleepers.

They can do all right in a mixed flock, however in some flocks the silkies and frizzles can be excessively targeted by roosters as they are "easy" to catch...

That's what I would be afraid of. I would hate for them to have a less than happy environment. Our chickens are also pets.

I'm only keeping my smaller, romantic roosters. Just sold a very friendly, mellow Cuckoo Marans rooster because he was not romancing the ladies and tearing up some of the hens. He was a really sweet guy though, I hated to do it!. The few I still have wait for the hen to accept them before doing the deed, or just go on their way if rejected.

I kept one that is the son of my Marans roo and Easter Egger cross though. Hormones have not kicked in yet, so he has time to hopefully learn from the other roos. I have 2 Sultan roos (Nester & Tut), 1 Spitzhauben (Molly), and Spitzhauben/Bantam Easter Egger cross (Wylie)....the Marans cross will have to prove himself gentle all the way around to be able to stay.

Oh, I also have a 6 week old Light Brahma/Cuckoo Marans baby boy. He has lots of time though before decisions have to be made.

One of my Marans hens is currently sitting on 4 sultan eggs, 4 Easter Egger Eggs, and 7 purchased English Orpington eggs. I'm pretty excited about this upcoming hatch! Hopefully will get a black or cuckoo sultan mix.

I have 4 NN hens returned from WV along with nine White Chantecler hens and two 8 week old cockerels, PLUS 7, what appear to be five 75% CX 25% DC and 2 pure pure DC chicks...the last five are about 4 weeks old. Sorry for such convolution....a list might have been smarter but too tired to do over.

@Curnow, you have pretty big bunch there, at first I thought you only had that cochin pullet.

You said that you are looking for breeds that are productive but docile- naked necks are THE BEST option you could get.

And I like the breeds that you have in your flock.

We do pretty good egg sales to regular customers, and a large family in our local Amish community, as well as supply our immediate family.

Above and beyond that....we enjoy our chicken therapy!

I've tried asking but always get no we don't do that or we are not allowed to do that legally etc.

Yet hear of other folks around me getting regular loads of discounted veggies, breads etc. Just recently learned of a local-ish newbie to the hobby(something like one or 2 yrs by now) getting this kind of thing.. in my 30 years of trying on and off with zero success............. can get a little annoying, feels like I haven't figured out the secret handshake or something.

That's what I get too. Very annoying indeed! Guess they are afraid we are going to eat the expired food ourselves and can't risk it. I try to grow fruits and veggies for ours, but that doesn't always work out. Frost got our apple, pear, peach, and plumb trees this year. I usually try to freeze some for winter treats, but probably not this year. Only a few apples on one tree and a some pears. We have a large mulberry tree in the chicken yard...frost got it too!

I sometimes buy the discounted .50 cent French and Italian breads at Wally Word for treats, but I hate going in there so it doesn't happen often.

Mine sometimes get what I call "Chicken Slumgullian" A mix of eggs, layer rations, oatmeal and milk or Kefir (if on hand)...Wow they think that's special!

That's quite big flock. Did you get those production reds as your first flock or for some kind of egg buisness?
