Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Good to hear from you PG. That is a fun post hearing about Mort's antics and the La FlecheNN babies. If you have the time and since Mort is rather tame, would it be possible to hold him for 10+ minute periods during the day and soak his foot in hot water ? It wouldn't hurt to try warm soaks if you have the time.

Yes I do believe that NN are becoming a bit in "vogue" not amoung the mainstream but for those who are more invested in the practice of raising chickens.

Will you have pictures to post soon?

Mort will certainly tolerate foot soaks, though there are no scabs or other openings on the foot, but it's worth trying.

I'll post some pics. of my mottly crew next week (my own computer comes back tomorrow).

I guess NNs are really only ever going to be popular amongst chicken lovers as they don't lay eggs like hybrids. Neither do my Brahmas for that matter, who also eat enormously, are lazy (they don't move far from the door as they can't be bothered to forage), and the hens are often broody.....but I still think they are great. NNs are excellent foragers in my experience and also have friendly natures.

So, let's have some other pics. from NN owners.

I hope your boy gets better!!

I had to laugh when you posted about being excellent foragers. My girls sure are great and they come running to me when I go to the coop with their faces full of dirt so you know they were looking for something good! They really are great foragers!

I have been wanting to ask you guys. One of my NN girls feels this need to climb on everything. I mean, window sills in the barn, wall ledges, doors.... she starts and goes the length of the barn just up climbing on or in things. Any idea why she does this or is she just practicing for the circus? I call her my circus girl. It is quite comical to watch too and she is the only one who does it. LOL

I have a question if anyone could help please. I have 5 NN chicks that hatched and still more on the way but... one of the turken eggs hatched out a non-naked neck chick. Is that normal? I'm wondering if the egg was mismarked? Not that it matters I love them anyway but I was just wondering....

Confused again,

Kathy

Kathy, it is OK (well, not ideal, but it's just the genetics).

If you cross two NNs with bow ties, you will get offspring in the following ratio....25% with naked neck and no bow tie, 50% with bow tie, and 25% with a feathered neck.If anyone knows anything different from this, please correct me!

NewToFarming....don't know as to whether your girl really is going to be an acrobat, but they are great fliers, aren't they? I find mine perched up anywhere, often quite high off the ground.

I appreciate the info, thank you.

PGPoultry .... They sure are! LOL But this girl was doing it again this morning! I think she is practicing for the circus and she is getting quite good at her balancing act!

Does anyone have the red turkens from Urch? If you do, can you post some pics. I thought I might order from them next year.
