Naked Neck/Turken Thread

One gal local to me is doing them as a side project. She just hatched one out about a week ago and plans to breed several more to start a small line locally.

I'm very excited by this surprise, I had mentioned I wanted a creative side-project with the naked necks since we decided on them over Swedish Flowers~ This is going to be a very fun spring, with all these chicks running about!

Sidenote:
As a wedding gift, my partner offered to buy me a half dozen FLF Ayam Cemani to start my own flock of those, I was wondering if a Cemani x NN crosses / solid black NN projects were being worked on? I've seen a few black skinned NN, but haven't dug back far enough to know if those lovely ladies were a part of a bigger breeding project or not~ Regardless, I think it'd be a fun project (Along with my NN x SFH crosses, which Kev has convinced me is an absolute necessity. )

I've had black skinned NN for a couple decades. Got the first ones via an egg trade, was supposed to be NN for NN but I was surprised at the black skinned ones. Tried to get more information but combination of language barrier/poor contact plus they just disappeared.. so no idea on their history. The originals came in a variety of colors(partridge, red, later breedings threw whites) but the black skin was best on the blacks so I just bred them in that direction. They basically look like NN cemani.

There are others on here with black skin NN.. also black skinned NN by the way of crosses with silkies are somewhat common. And then there are the Showgirls- NN silkies.

As for your source of fibro, have you talked with others about differences between cemani vs svart hona. I haven't followed threads on those much, noticed one tidbit that might be of interest to you- svarts allegedly are a little more dual purpose than cemani?

Can't figure out FLF?

I've done some reading, and it does seem that the Svart's might be a better option, I just think I'm being a show boat with our neighbors with the Ayam's LOL. However, since I plan on trying to combine the dual purpose of the NN and the Aesthetic appeal of the Fibro breeds, I'd eventually like to try adding the stature of something like Jersey's or Rhode Islands after a few years as well, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

do you have other light coloured chicks? if there is only 1 different colour than the others they might peck it and eventually kill it.

Hello! I'm new to NN's, looking at bringing three hens home in a couple days. However, my only rooster is a RIR. I have looked through this thread for pictures or information on NNxRIR and haven't been able to find a picture. Would these two breed out well? Does anyone have a picture to share, or can direct me to one? I'm also wondering how the cross would turn out as a dual purpose bird? The other hens I cureently have are BO, and one Leghorn (I had two...). Thanks for any information!

A lot of backyard RIR are more likely to be Production Reds which are a line of RIR bred for egg production. They tend to be good layers but generally rather slender.

The other issue are the new NN are they from dual purpose stock or mixed backyard stock- which is very common and many are not quite dual purpose. Nothing wrong with that but if one has production in mind best to be sure.

If the NN are dual purpose, they should throw some birds with a little more meat and overall to be good layers. It's possible to select from then on for more dual purpose type- meatier and still lay well.

If the NN are black tail buffs, expect all chicks to be varying shades of reddish with black tails.

I've been researching doing this cross but thought it would be several generations before the crest looked this nice. I am wondering what you started with? I have a tolbunt polish frizzled rooster over smooth tolbunt polish hens. I don't know if he could 'handle' a full sized naked neck hen. I am considering a nn/mille fleure bantam cochin. Any thoughts?

Whose birds?

polish roo can breed full size NN no problem.

for mille fleur, best to breed with a buff/light red NN to make it much easier getting back to mille fleur coloring in the second generation.
