Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I finally have an official gender count from my last hatch. Out of 19 chicks total (two of which were hatched out by my Buff Silkie), I have ten cockerels and nine pullets. So I'm still tending towards more cockerels than pullets, but have improved my ratios considerably...not that I actually had anything to to with it.

I have a total of three fully feathered birds, one of which was expected and the other two are...uh...bonuses.

Here are the NN cockerels, starting with my biggest boy, Tank, who weighed in at 2.2 lbs at 6 weeks, still the biggest bird I've bred:

Next is Sylvester, my black & white barred that's now showing red as well:

And now Frost, who has continued to make really impressive late weight gains after appearing to be the runt of the litter for the first two weeks after hatch:

Nugget (as is gold nugget and chicken nugget, LOL!). His legs have a bit more of a green tint than I would like, but I'm hoping his golden buff coloring remains fairly clean so I can possibly show him. He's a throw-back to his grandfather, but with a much better disposition, and he's the slowest one to feather out with a nicely dense, meaty body.

Bucky, who's surprisingly calm but probably a cull in the long run:

And now the rest who don't have names yet.

Wonderful birds, as always!!!!! Loving Tank!!!! (No, I'm not biased...)

And now the NN pullets:

Trixie, currently my favorite for breeding in my meat bird program, weighing in at 1.59 lbs at 6 weeks. She also shows the most barring among the females.

Buffy, also one I'm favoring for breeding in my meat bird program:

Michonne, my little warrior chick. @Fire Ant Farm - I think she's going to be as much of a handful for me as Puppy is for you. This is one heck of an independent, strong-willed little pullet...incredibly affectionate, but very strong-willed. I was hoping to be able to show her too, but she's got hints of white in her black feathers.

Shasta, with feathering that remains a bit of a mystery to me:

Saffron:

And the runt of the flock, currently sporting the name "Calm Down!". Yeah..she's a bit flighty, hence the reason for the blurry photo.

Oh...and these are the two hatched by my Silkie. No longer Bonnie and Clyde - it's Bonnie and Claudia instead, and Claudia is one of the sweetest birds I've ever hatched.

I love the look of Buffy! Good luck with that Puppy wannabe - she's a handful...

DesertChic, what is the average difference between male and female NNs for your flock and growing chicks? I'm still getting a feel for what is a reasonably sized girl, since all of them are smaller than the boys by a decent amount...

LOL! You are totally biased and you know it.

He's one of my absolute favorites too. He runs over to me and when I hold me hand out he just lays his chest in my hand and relaxes completely. He's extremely calm and trusting. But this guy,

...This is Jake, and he's gonna get me in trouble because he's so sweet and attached to me that I'll probably find it impossible to ever cull him. He cries if I ignore him and will jump onto my shoe to try to sneak out and be with me whenever I get close enough. He spent almost ten minutes on my shoe while I weighed all of my Dorkings, content to just be with me. He's actually a full brother to both Michonne and Claudia.

Sounds like that cross that gave you those three is a good one for breeding for disposition. While Tank is not a cuddler, he is so very sweet and is the most good natured rooster ever. I'm loving all his children - wish I could keep all of them....

(You're such a softie for the cockerels.....

Yeah, I figured as much - no idea what Snape is made out of, which is the fun of it! I'm finding all three black chicks are all feathering out brownish- I think it's the same way Mystique feathered out. (@Kev - Partridge?) Here's a photo (they're 1 week today):

So by simple dominant, do you mean like the following (I don't know the right gene names):

ROSE/ROSE = rose comb
ROSE/wt = rose comb
wt/wt = no rose comb

That fits - I would expect Snape to only have one allele. And I'm getting closer to a 50% rose comb result from what I can tell (maybe a bit less).

- Ant Farm

Partridges hatch either dark brown or a chimpunk variant with huge wide middle stripe on back with a spotty head- wyandotte chicks are a good example of latter.. not too many of the former.. picture of this example in below:

If the down was black, probably ER..

It's R for rose. Captiaized as it is dominant over wild type, r (actually r+ as + denotes wild type but just r will do nicely) so it's RR, Rr for rose comb rr for not.

btw what's wt?

At 6 weeks my pullets are averaging out at 1.4 lbs with the largest weighing in at 1.59 lbs and the smallest weighing in at only 1.12 lbs.

My cockerels are averaging 1.72 lbs with Tank weighing in at 2.2 lbs and the smallest weighing in at 1.51 lbs.

Down was bark brown for two, more black for the third, all three have this coloring. Mystique hatched out looking like these chicks except these chicks had a little more brownish tone... What would you call her color/pattern? Any ideas/guesses as to how these little ones will turn out? (Just because I can't wait to find out...

Sorry, I didn't know the allele abbreviations. wt for wild type.
