Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Sounds like that cross that gave you those three is a good one for breeding for disposition. While Tank is not a cuddler, he is so very sweet and is the most good natured rooster ever. I'm loving all his children - wish I could keep all of them....

(You're such a softie for the cockerels.....

What can I say? I've always gotten along better with men than women, even in the animal world.

And I really do have some amazingly sweet cockerels/roosters around here. My husband and I were discussing that fact just this morning because both Bosch and Chewey, an EE rooster with crooked toes, are more like pets than anything else. Both will drop whatever they're doing to come running across the yard to me to be snuggled. Chewey forgoes food in the morning until he gets a hug from me. It's kinda crazy.

@DesertChic- Really gorgeous birds and great growth to boot! What generation NN's are you on?

@Fire Ant Farm - So glad we are hatching out at similar times! So exciting! They look adorable...

Down was bark brown for two, more black for the third, all three have this coloring. Mystique hatched out looking like these chicks except these chicks had a little more brownish tone... What would you call her color/pattern? Any ideas/guesses as to how these little ones will turn out? (Just because I can't wait to find out...

Sorry, I didn't know the allele abbreviations. wt for wild type.

Oh! of course, wt, that's a great one. I kind of hesitate but maybe Mystique has a combination of ER-Db-Pg. Normally, things like Pg, Co etc have little or no effect on ER... unless Db is present. For example, sebrights and laced polish are all ER and they have those patterns precisely because of Db. No Db, they would either be black or at most, variably patterned birchens.

Db however has no effect on adult E birds, as far as I know. I can't remember if they turn E chick down to brown or not.. that is why I don;t think those chicks are E..

I have noooo idea how those chicks will turn out, you will just have to wait and see, sorry.. lol!

She may still molt out solid black, however it is very typical for black bred with other colors to eventually some 'off color'. Especially on roosters. btw your birds sure throw beautifully colored babies and I really like the temperaments of some of your birds too.

I too, have a "Puppy".. not a NN though. She is sweet but man, she demands attention to the fullest extreme. It gets annoying sometimes.. makes walking difficult and especially when I am trying to get in or out of the pen and do not want any birds loose on that day. Have to squeeze in and out real carefully or she;s OUT!

Cool! Mine have what would be the very most subtle version of this (if this is what it is at all). At first I thought they were smudges of dirt - except, um, no dirt...

We'll see ho they turn out - Daddy is a totally mystery as far as what he's hiding genetically...

But but but..... Why can't you look into your genetic crystal ball for me? Just this once - pleeeeeease???

I suspect we all have a Puppy in our flocks eventually....

This hatch is my third generation. It's been an amazing learning experience for me in a very short time frame. I've only been keeping chickens since 2014.

I'm loving your little white "chipmunk" NN. Can't wait to see how that one feathers out! I've had a lot of chipmunks but never one that white, and all of mine seem to feather out differently. Hence the reason why I never try to guess what they'll eventually look like based on their chick coloring. I get it wrong about 75% of the time.

I'm starting to think I have two puppies. My broody NN hen, Reba, has not figured out how to climb the hardware cloth in the isolation pen and reach the latch to the door to let herself out. She still can't get out of the cabin, but that girl is determined to return to her favorite nesting box! I now have her pen door secured by a large, heavy block.

I finally have an official gender count from my last hatch. Out of 19 chicks total (two of which were hatched out by my Buff Silkie), I have ten cockerels and nine pullets. So I'm still tending towards more cockerels than pullets, but have improved my ratios considerably...not that I actually had anything to to with it.

I have a total of three fully feathered birds, one of which was expected and the other two are...uh...bonuses.

Here are the NN cockerels, starting with my biggest boy, Tank, who weighed in at 2.2 lbs at 6 weeks, still the biggest bird I've bred:

Next is Sylvester, my black & white barred that's now showing red as well:

And now Frost, who has continued to make really impressive late weight gains after appearing to be the runt of the litter for the first two weeks after hatch:

Nugget (as is gold nugget and chicken nugget, LOL!). His legs have a bit more of a green tint than I would like, but I'm hoping his golden buff coloring remains fairly clean so I can possibly show him. He's a throw-back to his grandfather, but with a much better disposition, and he's the slowest one to feather out with a nicely dense, meaty body.

Bucky, who's surprisingly calm but probably a cull in the long run:

And now the rest who don't have names yet.

Beautiful!
