Naked Neck/Turken Thread

So the second hatch went well... I haven't counted all the chicks because there are just too many... I'll count the bad eggs later tonight when I tear the hatcher down. All in all, I got a ridiculous amount of NN! 80/205 were from another farm where they had used a rooster (NN x Silkie) with a few different hens: (Rock / Barred Rock / New Hampshire). Looks like some have retained some patchy black pigmentation. Only a couple have feathered feet... when will I know if the feathers are Silkie type or other?

Feathered Feet! @Kev won't like this!
Was thinking of @Kassaundra , but the pigment is so minimal in these... I love your birds! I'd love to see more pictures!

Hey now! lol I don't like it on my birds but I gladly appreciate others loving their feather feets.

Fibro (Fm, btw) is very affected by various genes that dilute either feather or skin pigmentation. Barring, mottle, wheaten, Id(what causes white or yellow legs in absence of barring/mottle). They variously make the skin look normal, patchy, pale grey, or even dark at hatch only to grow up with normal looking skin.

you are likely to come across claims fibro is sex linked, it is not at all. congrats on the glorious bounty btw

Many thanks for suggestions on memory storage! I'm going to check them out.

Is there something like a memory device you can upload directly from a smartphone?

Still have the last old laptop.. one of those days will try hauling it someplace and see if anything can be salvaged thanks for that idea, DesertChic.

Are feathered legs dominant?  What are the denominations for feathered legs and silkie feathers?

Feather legs are polygenetic which basically means they're a bugger to get rid of if you don't want them. You can think you've gotten rid of them and then you hatch a chick that proves you wrong.

Because it's a polygenetic trait no one knows 100% how it works. However, it can frequently behave like an incomplete dominant and that is denoted as "PTI". So with that you have:

PTI/PTI = Feather legs
PTI/pti+ = Less feathers, but some
pti+/pti+ = Normal, clean legs

Silky feathers are denoted with "h":

H+/H+= Normal feathers
H+/h = Normal feathers, carrying (aka "split to") silky
h/h = Silky feathers

So, @Kev , if I want to cross Svart Honas in with my NNs to get more fm, what is the best feathering color/pattern to use to get the best dark skin?

Mystique is the best choice from what I remember of your birds. Snape too.. especially if he has black eyeliner.

Birchen and E black straight up are the best colors for dark skin. Wheaten is the worst. It's possible on e+.. easy to get very dark skinned hens but I find a lot of grey tints on these, very strong tendency for even the black skinned cockerels to lose it totally or quite a lot at maturity.

Like this guy:

Watch out for yellow or white legs(on non barreds or mottleds) as these have Id, it will mess with black skin however it is sex linked so you still can use something like a fibro roo over a white leg hen and you will have perfectly dark skinned pullets out of it.. the cockerels will have fibro but they will either look normal skinned right out of the egg or show variable hint of it and grow out red skinned. You can still use the cockerels knowing they are Id/id+ for fibro offspring in both sexes.

Thank you very much for this! I thoroughly appreciate the vast knowledge of BYC!

Coming from an IT background, you don't want to keep all your important data on just locally kept hard drives. Using an automated backup service like Carbonite, Crash Plan, or Backblaze is a GREAT option *in addition to* drives kept in your home that you move photos to. Google Photos has an automatic photo backup service (kinda like Dropbox) where you can save not only your mobile images, but you can specify folders on your computer as well. This photo storage doesn't count against your Google storage as long as you're good with backing up photos to 2048 size. If you want to backup the full resolution files in excess of 2048 pixels, then those will count. Most people will honestly not need larger than that size, at this current point in time.

Now, as far as data recovery goes, there's a chance that you can remove the hard drive from that laptop and just get a cheap adapter that you can use to connect the hard drive to your current computer, as though it were an external drive all on its own. This doesn't always work, but when it does, it's a nice treat to harvest your data from a drive that no longer boots.

Very handsome rooster!

Just out of curiosity, does the presence of "gypsy face" in any way improve the chances of the fibro genes "working" better? I was just wondering if the natural occurrence of that hyper-pigmentation on one part of the body might be an indicator of any sort.

That's the running idea. People like to say for good black skins you need fibro and GF but I honestly don't think it's anything near that simple. Seems like a reasonable idea though! I have never paid attention to this idea I just had right now- perhaps having it is also evidence the bird does not have Id. Id(what makes the legs yellow or white, like on RIR and buff orps) definitely affects fibro... but if the chicken is black feathered, you cannot tell if it has Id or not as it will not show visibly on black chickens.. this is why you have strange things like a white or yellow legged breed that allows for black legs on the blacks.

Excellent info and tips, appreciate it. Is there something I should look out for in those services such as Dropbox Cloud and Google Photos? Secure, safe? Google sure has a lot of things you can do with a single account.. I had wondered about connecting the laptop to something else and see if that worked.. glad that was not such a stupid idea lol..
