Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I know it's still young. Any thoughts on the tail feathers? I got this one and a WCBP and they were straight run, both of their tail look like this. I have 4 other breeds that are for sure pullets and none of their tails look like this. Just happens to be that they are my 2 favorites.

Looks like malformation from extreme stress during the first week, like going too long without proper food or heat. Related to what's called "fret marks" or "stress bars". As long as they are fed well and kept happy then the next set of feathers that grow in should be just fine.

The position in the feather tells you at what point in development the stressor occurred. You don't usually see them at the very tip, though. It's only all the way across in the very first set of feathers on a hatchling. After that they occur on seemingly random feathers because of how they grow back after a molt.

Good to know! They have a light and food and water. I think it may that my baby ducks are picking on my baby chickens. I'm going to have to separate them.

Been ultra-busy on the farm, so a very quick update: Batch #2 has been moved to the remodeled Egg-mobile... Batch #1 (below) is still going strong in the chicken tractors. Primary pasture is coming in nicely, I might give it another 3 weeks before I run any animals on it.

A couple of questions.

1 - A couple of my chicks seem to be getting nicked by the feed trays that are out for them. Is there a better thing to use?
2 - I would say most of my chicks seem to have a raised bump where their spurs would be. I noticed a couple of them at hatch. Is this possibly a telling factor on gender? I do know that girls can have the bumps and/or spurs too, but still lol.
