Here's an up date on the chicks I got growing out



First we have the white Naked necks



then we have Splash



Here we have 1 blue Naked Neck


then the Red Naked necks





Last but not least we have my lovely BLRNN'S

the color is likely due to him being half silver and half gold. Gold is the normal/wild type gene(all red junglefowl are gold.. ditto for light brown legorns etc). Silver interrupts the production of gold series pigments, helping people create black and white versions in some breeds. Example: the only difference between buff and light brahmas is they're gold and silver, respectively. If a rooster has one copy of both gold and silver, the color that rooster is a common result.

I love the color on his wing and saddle. Kinda gold? Beautiful. Thanks for the pictures. One of the best things about the naked neck turken thread is all the pictures!

Ahhh, while the eggs certainly are impressive.. I know the feeling- had a hen I really wanted to hatch chicks from but she kept laying doubles. It got annoying even though it was fun impressing everybody with those huge eggs.. some would not believe they were chicken eggs. Ha.

It seems possibly genetic as I did manage to get enough single yolkers from that hen, a small percentage of her daughters were prone to laying some doubles, especially when they just started or were starting again after a molt. So far, none of the granddaughters have this habit... did not deliberately select for this trait(if it was heritable), though. there apparently can be a heritability for twins in human maternal lines so I'm supposing not a much of a leap to imagine it can happen in chickens..?

Birds have pituitary glands. It induces seasonal behaviors, not sure how much influence it has on laying double yolks...?

I do love the size and looks of your Blackchop, sure hope you manage to get singles and hatch chicks.. her and Gordon would produce Godzillas!

Maybe some weird raptor would emerge if I tried to hatch her eggs (or as Nitrostreak suggests, a turkey). The real reason is that they are always double yolked, so I'd be lucky to hatch anything.

I must try to read up on my chicken physiology or maybe some learned member can tell me. Do chickens have a pituitary gland? I'm just wondering if the reason for her being so big and laying these monster double yolkers is a problem with her pituitary gland (should she have one!).

Kev, the pituitary bit was probably a bit of lateral thinking. I was thinking excess growth hormone and maybe excess sex hormones, too. However , in humans, a tumour producing excess growth hormone would compress the area producing sex hormones and lead to infertility.
