KKH..... it is looking like nothing too serious. I am praying your babies will be well!! Hope it all clears up .

Could there have been some biting ants?

I like the ant idea solution. When the sun is shinning the ants are about and some can be evil. All my chicks from the same hatch look wonderfully healthy and pretty. They are outside also in the dirty dirt and love it.

homeschoolchick, You know, it is a possibility. I had the chicks dirt bathing in the large run so they could get some sun. We do have biting ants. They're especially bad in the summer time. I throw DE in the run which helps.

flower, the chicks are six weeks old. I wrote it down on the calendar. They hatched out mid Feb. The weather has been crazy here. One day it's 75 degrees out, the next it's snowing. At least the garage stays a constant temp and I can roll up the doors in the day time so that they get the sun. I also have been letting them out in the side yard supervised. I wouldn't want a hawk, or even a crow, to take off with one of them!

They're so big. I can't wait to see them full grown! I keep hoping that both my blues are hens. I'm pretty sure the yellow skinned one is. I am reminded of Blackchops which gives me hope that the other big blue one could be a girl!

No idea, never seen that... two things came to mind- reaction or they got burned by heat lamp being too close? I know someone who had heat lamps for their peafowl too close to the perch and the feathers on their backs melted some...

my one remaining NN (we lost 25 birds to an attack a couple wks ago)..but my one remaining NN looks TERRIBLE...
she survived the attack; but lost MOSTa TON of her feathers..etc..she looks ridiculously TERRIBLE...she has no open
wounds..its a miracle the ones that surivived did..(we had 11 in the run that literally must have broken down the chicken door to get out of the coop attack...to get into the run...) when I came back home later that day after securing the coop/run and hubby burying the 20 chickens we lost and looking for the remaining 5 missing...(never to be found)...3 more had came home..so they must have ran away and came back when the coast was clear...
she was one of them..smart turken..but...anything we can do to help promote feathering again?

Doesn't look too serious to me, either (a bit like my heels when the shoes chafe!),
As it looks dry a bit of olive oil may soothe it and is totally non-toxic.

How horrible for the birds. was it dogs?

If the feathers were pulled out, they will start regrowing very soon. Giving lots protein will help- feed with higher % or cat food as treats etc. But if the feathers were broken with the quill still in the skin, they won't be replaced until the next annual molt. Their bodies doesn't 'know' the feather is broken and to replace it.

Yeah..it was a TERRIBLE day!! That day was at the top of our "BAD" days in our life...
that was the day we found out my husband only has a few more motnhs at work..after 13 yrs of loyalty, they are restructuring and giving his job to a "team leader" at 1/2 the pay..sigh..so much for loyalty anymore...
and my daughter was sick for over 21 days with a fever..so we had an abdominal ultrasound for her that morning (she's 6...found out she had mono/enlarged spleen)..
and we woke up to a coop door that was open and 20 birds all over our yard..Brian had to put 2 of them down..their insides were hanging out...we think that a larger animal
got the 5 that were missing completely and never found..and that a roving dog got the rest...they only had a couple li'l puncture holes on them...
my son, who raised them from 3 days old of course, so for over a yr had taken care of them daily...and had become SOOOO close to one of them, Goldie..he fell on the ground
bawling (he's 14) and he was sick for days..he couldnt function at all..couldnt eat, speak, get out of bed..etc..he said "Why Goldie" They could have taken ANY of them but her and we
could have been ok..but no...they had to get her...I thank God each time he talks about her, that she wasnt one of the ones that had insides/outside of her..she was laying there peacefully...
but I have EXTREME guilt about that night...I always am a light sleeper..and that night I crashed hard and the windows were open and I heard NOTHING...
and now I have a hard time sleeping at all..I get up multiple times a night and flash a light on the coop door to make sure its closed..even tho I know its locked...I cant sleep ugh...my son is doing better; but he still has his moments...and so do i...

I'll have to take a pic of her tomorrow...the Roo still has an open wound thats healing from the attack...we have blue kote'd it..its not infected believe it or not..
the others are missing feathers like it was pulled out; so they have bare skin spots...

Wow! I am terribly sorry to hear about all of your family's stress! That is devastating! I feel so bad for your family, especially your son

I hope your husband can find a job real soon! We will pray for you all!

KKH and Flower- We have had a horrible time with ants! They have made tremendous nests all around our home and have managed to invade just one side wall of one of our coops.
