Naked Neck/Turken Thread

marlow, I am not anywhere near an expert and am wrestling w/ the same issue of gender id, but for what it's worth (trust me not much) I would guess female.
Thanks for your opinion. I hope all the female opinions are right!

Now to wait on the turken experts to share their opinions.

I have no experience with single comb bird sexing so I'm having fun with my crew of 10 chicks that are mostly single combed breeds.

Actually DDD, Arian's comb used to be even more ridiculous as it had a 'horn' on one side at the back. He is only a little fellow and one day tried to mount Blackchops in front of Gordon. Now Gordon is normally a tolerant fellow, but that was a bit too much. Gordon came shooting over and chased Arian off, catching him by the comb and pecking off the 'horn'.

Then the story gets worse. Gordon began clucking provocatively at Blackchops and offered her the bit of comb.....which she promptly wolfed down. Ah well, waste not want not......or was this the ultimate 'one upmanship'?

So Arian now has a pretty symmetrical comb. Pity he has 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other!
See if Gordon can take care of that extra toe for you too.

Pullet
Here is my Turken chick at 7 weeks old. What does everyone think? Cockeral or pullet? Just noticed today it has some redness starting around the face. I thought it had been injured at first then realized it was just getting red on it's neck, I'm guessing it's because the neck will be red colored and it is just starting to get the color to it. Am I right? I apologize in advance for picture quality I was trying to hold chicks that didn't want to be held in one hand and the camera in the other. If I need better pictures to help the experts figure out gender on this chick I can probably get my DH to help me this weekend.

It is in the corner in this picture (obviously!

). This is the only semi body shot I could get.

Thank you for that guess. I'm hoping it is a girl since boys will likely be sold. I only have a couple unique chicks in the 10 chicks we have right now and the turken is one of them. I have a little polish too (as you can see in the group photo) and it is a girl. I definately want to be able to have a couple unique chicks in a laying flock, the turken definately fits the bill for uniqueness! ;)  DH isn't a fan of the turken but I like the unique look of them, and my kids like it too. This one is called Shaved Neck by my kids!

I vote female too. shaved neck! funny story- a teenage friend of nephew's came here once. back home, he told his parents that I shaved the necks on my chickens..... he really thought I did that! :gig

what is the chicken in bottom of your second picture? it has a buttercup comb but seems polish mix?

That would be our mix that I am guessing is EE/polish. I've been told it's a boy. I will be watching to see how it grows but likely it will be sold since we don't plan on keeping more than one roo out of this group of chicks and there is an Ameracauna in the group that I know is a roo (I've known that one since it was 3 weeks old).

:ya :ya I couldn't believe my eyes this morning!! I found an egg shell in one of the broody's nest. My first thought was that mama pecked it open and ate the contents (from my experience raising parrots)..then I heard the peeping! How could it be?! This is only day 18. There are two more pipping!! I'm so excited...I'm not going to get anything done today. :P

The first one out is from "Goldie" and it has her gold "eyebrows". It's got a tiny bow tie and is just darling!

The second broody has got one pipping under her too. :celebrate

Thanks! I didn't know if it would be lurking in the background somewhere and it could pop out later if 2 recessives got together maybe.

Not sure if it could pop put or not.
I will tell you though that 2 with naked necks can produce a fully feathered chick. I'm sure that it has happened to me, got two right now that it bugging the time out of me. I think that what happens is that both parents were not ( not sure on the wording) pure for NN, both carring a gene for Nn ( I think is how it is put on the genes line).
