Naked Neck/Turken Thread

O.K. Question for any and everyone. I am new to the chicken raising and I have been blessed with the two most beautiful, kind, NN ever. One started laying almost two weeks ago. She'll lay in the morning, then the next day a little later in the afternoon then take a day off. No problem there. The second one, as far as I know has not laid at all. I'll go out to the coop and the non-layer will come over, start to cackle a little then jump up in the box, give me a dirty look, peck the egg that's in the box, jump down and walk off. I don't think she sees me as a threat to her coop, I hope not, I just don't understand why one is laying and the other isn't. When I go outside they always run up to me and follow me around. When I go towards them they squat down and either let me pet them or pick them up.

Anyone? I'm not use to chicken personalities and I'm trying to figure out all their quirks. Any advice from you veterans out there would be very appreciated.

No expert advice here but I have seventh month olds. Two Wellsummer, one has been laying for almost one month, the other nada. The second one is larger but her comb and wattles are pale pink. Reddened combs and wattles are of sign that the hormones are ripe for laying. The same applies to my three Wyandottes . First it is the time of year and second all of us have our own internal clock and develop at different rates. I enjoyed your story. It sounds as if the "hen" who is not laying, jump into the box and says, "Look I am trying.............." The bird is a hen right ? What color is her "facial furniture" ? Turkens have great personalities !

The laying one "Original" has beautiful, full red wattle and comb. The non-layer, "Extra Crispy", is a little behind in color and size. I hope she is just saying "Look, I'm trying." I hope she doesn't think I'm threatening her coop or the egg, even though it isn't hers. They are fun birds. They're 6 months old and I hope they stay around for awhile. They are both hens.

Thank you.

I don't have any NNs but find them interesting. I'd like to know more about their general personality and temperament. I had a Showgirl cockerel that was so cool. He would take field mice away from the cats, who were playing with them, and after the great chase with the other birds, would kill (if not dead) and eat them. It was quite a site to see him gasping as he would try to bolt down the mouse whole, with only hind feet and part of a tail sticking from his beak. The other Showgirls were entertained but didn't take initiative. I was wondering if this behavior was due to the NN breeding in them. This is not typical Silkie behavior from my experience.

Your hens are real beauties:love I am with you in HOPING that the girls who are laying eventually DO SO. Could be the time of year also ??????

Thank you flower. Your hopes came in handy. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I say something, this is what I get today.

Guess it's all about timing.
