I would like silver laced NN in either size, but have decied that I need to focus on what I have and also need to keep within my limited senior citizen budget. In fact eventually i want to limit my flock .. drat I just ordered Silver Spangled Hamburgs because I found a hatchery in AK that has them and will ship in May. Sure hope they arrive in good shape. I want their beauty and hardieness to be bred into my flock. They will have a crele rooster to be their only mate. He is my CREAM LEGBAR and I am hoping I can make some NN green egg layers eventually.
KEV and other genetic gurus, What could be the results of a crele/silver spangled mix ???
Are Silver Sussex laced? I guess they are, but the lacing doesn't look the same. I had been trying to think of a laced breed that is single combed and all I could come up with was LF Cochin.
Thanks for the help! I did completely forget about LF Cochins.
SS were chosen because they're birchen, which is the 'base' for a completely laced bird including the tail. Sebrights are birchen for example. Wyandottes are not birchen and so they have black tails as a result. Wyandottes also have other genetic differences that would make it difficult to figure out which birds I want if I crossed them with mine.
Silver Sussex are simple, 'clean' birchens without any other genes to make a mess out of picking out the F1, F2 etc. because if the bird is missing some of the necessary genes for lacing, it would be more obvious and easier to cull them out.
I just like the all-laced look better but also the other reason is because there doesn't seem to be any laced tail large fowl.... the closest would be silver and gold lace polish but they are not dual purpose type. Did not pick LF cochin as feather legs are very, very hard to clean out after a cross- full leg feathering involves two dominant genes and also one recessive, it's the recessive one that is quite the challenge, it puts little and sparse stubs on the legs and looks horrible. Just googled pictures- Cochins are on eb not birchen. Good grief I should just go ahead and do them with black tails LOL...
Ah, see I like the lacing on the Sebrights, etc. I hadn't even thought about black tail vs laced tail, but come to think of it, I've never had silver laced male anything --- had silver laced Polish, Cochin, and Wyandotte here, but all female.
I think I have a hatchery silver laced frizzle Cochin bantam guy (trade with a kid in town that couldn't keep roosters, as if I need another rooster), but he is so *off*, it's hard to say. I have some black 'split to silver laced' Polish x Silkie cross hens. I guess if I mate them and the chicks come out silver laced, I'll know for sure.
You know my naked necks all have feather-leg in their background --- from Silkie and Cochin. I didn't have a problem getting clean legs, but then again, it wasn't a conscious effort.
I adore spangles!
Sorry, rambling...
Some of the Naked Necks from this weeks hatch:
All are Naked Neck Green-Eggers (posssibly frizzle) --- except the 2nd from the right black, it is a from Java cross.
Kassaundra, I just tried to take photos of my new babies that hatched this weekend, and I have to tell you....I now really really REALLY appreciate your great talent at photography!!!! All your pictures turn out soooo cute! How on earth do you get them to stand still? Mine where running all over the place and jumping out of the little container and everything! hahahha! I did post some on Incubators anonymous if you want to see them. No NNs in this batch so I didn't post them here.
