Well, I candled my eggs I received from Dipsy. Was expecting the worse based on the condition of the outside of the box when it was delivered. It was clear the box was completely mishandled in transit. Out of 15 eggs shipped I have 10 with detached air cells. Out of the 5 left, 3 are developing and 2 show no signs of development. My heart is crushed and I'm really ticked at the post office right now. The eggs were brilliantly packaged and the box was marked very clearly on all sides that it contained eggs and was fragile. Keep your fingers crossed for me that those 3 little boogers keep developing and make it to hatch.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Dang! They usually travel so well. I don't think there is any way to hold USPS accountable for mishandling, but I can offer you another group if you'll cover S&H.

Ok. So I watched this video about feather sexing chicks at a day (or 2) old.

. Then I wrote to McMurray's Hatchery and asked them what breeds they used feather sexing on. This is the response I got from them.

Feather sexing requires maintaining 2 breeder flocks for the parents and one breeder flock for the chicks. (Two flocks would work, but this is easiest way to explain it.)
The breeder flock for the female line must be slow feathering only, and the breeder flock for the male line must be fast feathering only. To breed for the chicks you would then cross the slow feathering females with the fast feathering males. The resulting offspring would be the opposite of their parents. Females fast feathering and the males slow feathering.
Some hatcheries just switch the males on the mother and father lines. The resulting offspring of one flock would be feather sexable and the offspring from the other flock would be sold as straight run. (Remember that the mother must be slow feathering and father fast feathering for feather sexing to work).
Most hatcheries just buy the slow feathering females and fast feathering males or simply ship in hatching eggs from someone already set up.
Most of your common white and brown egg layers and a few rare breeds are feather sexable. Probably all chickens have the genes for for fast and slow feathering, so it would be just a matter of culling for this trait until you have two lines that breed true--one for each trait.
Because the males' feather grow slower, they will be shorter and of equal length (see Figure 1). Females' feathers will be not only longer but some feathers will be much longer than the others (sort of a row of long and a row of short feathers--see Figure 2).

The shippment of eggs from DDD were in perfect shape ! I guess that I was lucky as I have received crushed eggs a time or two. DDD does the best job of packing that I have ever seen. Beautiful eggs also !

Remember the Fibromelanotic Naked Neck Green-Egger chick in the pot of sugar cane a few months back? Here she is now. She's still 'black on black' but the camera flash washed out her skin color.

If you want you could order them from a hatchery...
Mixed reviews on if that's a good way or not. I got mine from cackle hatchery. I lost one in shipping but they gave me an extra, so I got all that I ordered plus you can get them vaccinated beforehand. Also they allow smaller orders for people that don't want 25 or more at a time. I got some really good healthy birds from them and they were always quick to settle any problems that came about

It's a shame you are closer (or close enough to pick up), I've got new Naked Neck chicks hatching here every week or so.

Yaaay, another of my Polish x Naked Neck Green-Egger girls just started laying --- pretty pale blue eggs. She's a wild one, though, and I can't get my hands on her. I just hate it that all my PolxNN crosses are so flighty! I can see it from the time they are youngsters in the brooder. Was just noticing they are the ones flying out of the chick pen (2' fence) before they are even fully feathered.
