Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hi and welcome! I love to surprise people by giving turken eggs and not telling them what they are. Then wait 21 days.. Heh heh!

I agree Daisy is a Daniel, Ninja is a boy ninja, not sure about Peach- a side shot would be nice. Can't tell on Si- needs a closer up.

How soon to tell depends on color and comb size can help... Daisy and Ninja both clearly show a male type of color patterning- easiest to describe for Ninja, the female version of his color would be either all black or mostly black with some brown lacing mostly limited to front of neck and breast. In contrast to mostly or all black breast with large colored patch on wings and he probably will develop more color on his back later on.

With some colors it can be trickier and have to go by size of body and comb. For example solid blacks or solid whites there's no early 'tells' by color like on Ninja.. have to wait until the combs and boys are really filling out which comes later.

I'm new to the chicken world and this is my first post. I hope I'm doing it right:) I'm a teacher and the first graders hatched chickens at the school I teach at. We're not sure where the eggs came from but most turned out to be turkens, much to the surprise of everyone. They needed a place to take them so we decided to give it a try. I have no idea what kind they are and I'd love to have some input as to whether they are roosters or hens. Can you help? They are about 8 weeks old.

My first NN is squatting! I am so excited. She started squatting about 5 /6 days ago so it shouldn't be long now! That group of NNs are 23 1/2 weeks old. The rooster from that hatch has been terrorizing all the older girls for weeks now. Have to say he doesn't know what he is doing yet! hahahha.....he usually ends up falling on his face over the hens head! hahhaha. Poor guy, he gets his feathers all ruffled up and walks away embarrassed!

I did lose a hen in the nest box a few days ago. So sad. She went in to lay an egg and a while later I went to collect the eggs and the other hens were already gone but she was still in there and I was just saying to her, "Are you gonna stay in here all day?" and I went to pet her and she was stiff as a board. OMG I was soooo upset. She was an 8 1/2 month old EE that gave me beautiful green/blue eggs! Not sure what happened. Egg bound? Does that happen to a young hen? We have copperheads around, maybe a snakebite? I don't know. I just buried her. She laid my favorite colored eggs!

So, now I am waiting for my new egg layers to start! My Isbar is now 27 1/2 weeks old and is getting pretty red in the face! She should start this month along with maybe 5 more pullets! Then, I should have some new layers in August including my Indian Runner Duck!

what color eggs do turkens lay? and does anyone know what the average age they start?i know its around 18 months and up but i was wondering if turkens lay later than normal or average

Most lay a brown egg. I do however have one that lays a white egg (she is half Brown Leghorn). I think some on here have some that lay green eggs (mixed with Ameraucana or Easter Egger).

If I remember correctly the ones that I raised started laying at about 24 to 26 weeks old.

Some pics of the crew at 10.5 weeks

This one I believe is the son of my araucana (bbr) and Reba my red NN hen

I just love the look of Funny face she just makes me smile

Fancy Reba's daughter

This girl may also be Reba's daughter, but I think her feathers are going to have a pattern, unlike Reba and Fancy

My NNs come from DDD and they are green egg layers. They all have a pea comb. Will post photos as soon as they start laying!!! Should be soon! They are now 23 1/2 weeks old and no one is laying yet.

My youngest NN babies are supposed to be green egg layers. They're only 3 weeks old but I'm anxious to find out! Half of them have single combs and half have pea combs. They have some funky patterns going on too. Then again, I'm anxious for the big gal, few months old, (if she IS a gal..) to lay to see her eggs, too. Funny how we sometimes want time to crawl and other times to fly when dealing with poultry. :3 With these little guys, my EEs, brown egg layers, game bantams and loads of other bantams, I should have a beautiful, highly diverse egg basket. :D
