Naked Neck/Turken Thread

How old were your naked necks when they started to lay? I have 3 that have red wattles and combs but no real interest in the nest boxes yet, They have started hanging around the rest of the flock rather than staying with their brooder mates completely away from the older chickens.

Why do you think he is in pain?

A roo is never to small to eat, if nothing else, skin and gut and use him for a great soup base.

Mine are not doing much moving around right now with the heat we are having.  They are a little more active in the morning and in the evening as the sun starts to go down.   If you want to see if he is in pain, pick him up and manipulate his legs and wings, rub around on his body and watch his reactions. I doubt he is in pain, just too hot to do much right now.

I think it's pain because he started doing this back when it was still 75 out, he walks heavy footed, and won't walk/run far without laying down where he ends up. He even lays down when eating. I've looked him over as much as he lets me but he keeps trying to get away and when he does he just walks a couple steps and lays down again...

Does he have black scabs on the bottom of his feet? If he does treat him for bumblefoot. Is he too heavy(fat)? He may have a genetic weakness in the leg and he may never be very active. I don't know, I am just throwing suggestions out there. Best of luck with him.

No scabs no wounds no outside wounds of any kind... So cull or wait to cull? I'm gonna cull him later on anyway.

good suggestions. picture may help... of him standing up if possible- so we can see condition of legs and toes.

him sitting down is not normal. without seeing him it is hard to guess what is the story.

I have some naked necks but all mine are multi colored. I really want some show quality!!!! I llove these birds.

Kev, I couldn't find where I read about the pink and blue making turquoise eggs. I have read about 20 books on chickens this year, plus all these threads and magazines. Who knows where I read that, but I did. Anyway, I knew a lot of what you wrote about, but it is always good for newcomers. Thanks for your response. I have a frizzle chick who is laying a tinted egg....pinkish tint. My rooster carries the blue/green egg gene so I guess next spring, I will find out what colors their chicks produce!

Cool, let us know what color that produces... the response was also outlining the reason to be a little skeptical of pinkish plus blue equaling turquoise. But would be very interesting if you do get turquoise layers!
