Ok as I am trying to learn on these birds. A question I am sure beaten to death. But single gene means chicks won't be Nn' s? And can you tell this? Or if you can point me where to read this? And Shabbat if I ever the gumption up I am close enough to you I could a lovely home to some culls! I also dont see maintaining about bantam?

Completely feathered neck is not a NN, no matter the parentage (one parent being a Nn) in that they did not inherit the gene at all, they cannot pass it on at all.

Nn inherited one gene these birds will have a partial naked neck or what is called a large bow tie. They only inherit one of the genes and can only pass one on to offspring so they can have feather necked or other Na (if bred to a non Nn) or a NN if bred to another Nn or NN.

See her large bow tie

A NN has both genes and has little or no bowtie, these can only pass on necked genes all their offspring will be either NN or Nn (the Nn if bred to a feather necked chicken)

See the small or no bow ties?

Now not to confuse it even more, we are just discussing presentation of neck feathers (just one gene) even my NN chickens that you see while having both genes are not pure naked necks, all my chickens are mixes, you can tell by feather coloring, comb shape, skin color, beards, and top knots on mine. Just b/c a chicken inherits both Na genes does not mean it is a pure Naked neck breed, just "pure" in the sense it carries both Na genes.

So Kev, are you proud???????? You should be, lol lol lol

Thank you kassandra! I have considered these for a while. Very nice explanation! I would love them in bantam.

You and me both! I haven't been able to find bantam NNs hardly at all. The only hatchery I found that sells them, I found too late and they're done for the year. So I'm hoarding (lol) NNs and bantam breeds in hopes of playing around with my own breeding..once they start laying for me, that is. *fist shake in general coop direction*

went to show here I cplumbus a few years ago there were a few but never seen any since!

I guess there's not a huge demand for them since generally NNs are a meat bird. Lol. Got the big poultry show and even bigger Swap Days down here next month so I'll look around for them there. Got my first LF NNs at the Swap Days and was hooked. And indeed you are fairly nearby! :) I have a sis up there so visit now and then. If you're doing nothing else the weekend of Swap Days, you should come on down. Folks come from surrounding states and you'd believe it by the crowd, but there's just about everything you can imagine, especially in the way of critters (namely poultry), sold there. Fun fun.
