Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Well here's some of my youngest from this past spring.

And last is a cockerel that I got from my blue English roo over my splash nn hen

Sharkman, I breed for extra large to jumbo eggs, birds built to sustain productive laying for an extended period

of time. Most of my birds are on the large side but the hybrids tend to have more meaty breasts and some of

purebred 'roos' can get over 12 pounds when fully mature. I don't breed cockerels or pullets.

I don't use hybrid cockerels in my breeding program and they are slaughtered at about 12 to 16 months. They

make wonderful table birds. I do however use hybrid hens in the program.

Nava...top of my list.

One more thing before I go looking for shots. I know this is a turken/nn thread but those

of you familiar with Australorps might be surprised at mine. This strain has been with us

For three generations and didn't suffer the infusion of leghorn several years back by those

seeking greater production and that also lightened the egg color. Mine are bigger birds with

shorter tails on the cocks than you might see on many contemporary Aussies.

Spunky, here are the pics I promised, they aren't good ones I was in a hurry and never did get a good shot of the darkest one. These 3 are boys and are the most naked of the batch.

front is Light, rear and blurry is dark, he is mostly black but just starting to get some white lacing, I think he is going to look birchen

Medium, the kinda barred looking one, he isn't barred really since I have no barred in the flock, maybe Kev would know what he is going to look like.

Light and Medium

both those shots were of Light, believe he might be Mensa's offspring?????

Medium

Both of these are older shots of Dark since I couldn't get any today.

Kassaundra, or anyone : how did you get Bare neck ? is it just percentage ?

I'm wanting to Breed N N, it's my understanding that :

An Pure Bred NN breed, will have no Bow tie and Yellow Legs ?
How old till get yellow legs

A Mix will have dark legs, and Bow ties . ( N n )

I went to a Breeders, the Pullets she had were ones with Bow ties.
So before I get another one, for later Breeding ( for the Bare neck )
I'm wanting to make sure it's as PURE as can get

Sorry I forgot to respond to your message, I read it at work and didn't get a chance to respond before getting called out, then got so busy I forgot all about it. (bad car wreck, combative psych pt, and a drug od all in a row)

Small bow ties or bare necks are NaNa, large bow ties are Nana, so a NN can be "pure" and have a small bow tie or a couple of feathers on the neck. Bare necks are hard to get even in NaNa and usually rely on other gene interactions.

Yellow legs are standard sop for NN, however one can have yellow legs and not be "pure" if it is mixed w/ another yellow legged breed. If it is going to have yellow legs that is what it is hatched w/

I lucked out and have some line or genetics in addition to the Sc gene that tends towards bare necks (thanks to Draye for Mensa she is one and poco for Reba, both have strong genetics w/ bare necks and do not carry the Sc gene so I know that is not contributing) and neither one of them has pea comb so I know that is not contributing, as to what specific gene is, I will have to differ to the genetic gurus b/c that is over my pay grade! lol

Hummm, If I can Grasp this new information

to start a good Breading Program, that's to say I want to Breed for a Buff and Red Bare Neck :

I should get an NaNa with as Little bow tie as I can find. hopefully both Parents were NaNa

I do not breed to sop standards, but if I were going to I would first get a copy of sop guidelines for NN breed and study the beegeezes out of it, know it forwards and backwards. Find out from the NN genetics gurus what is the hardest thing to breed out or in, then find the best I could of whatever the hardest thing to get right is, then be prepared to cull heavily. The guidelines of yellow legs, small bow tie, and single comb are obvious but there are tons of little stuff (seemingly little to non "breeders") like size, shape, configuration .................. I would train my eye at what I am looking for by studying pics of what is good and bad before ever buying a single bird.
