Naked Neck/Turken Thread

16 out now, most are very energetic I have my doubts about one but still hopefull. I have some seriously naked NN's in the hatch. One that skin and feathers are so black you can't tell what's what.

12 to go
Can't wait to see!!!!! Does that mean some of the brown eggs are hatching now, too?

Do you use egg cartons at hatching? If you do, could you send me a photo of how you cut the carton? Thanks!

Yes a few of the brown and two whites have hatched, but I was shocked at how many of the green eggs are NN, I know Jaxom is NaNa, but there were two other boys that have feathered necks, and all the green egged females are feathered necks.

I do not use egg cartons but do hatch upright like that. So far either my bator has been full enough to keep them all upright, and when not my incubator is a Brinsea and it has metal rails I can put in to keep the eggs upright.

Okay, I'm giggling here because I have chicks (one under a broody and 2 in the incubator) from Kev's roo and DDD's hens. Did you two know you make beautiful babies together?!

But of course, we have good genes... ;) I'll second Lisa- pictures!

24 out now, the two left haven't pipped at all, but when I candled at day 10 I thought I had two duds but wasn't 100% sure so I let them stay so could be those two. A couple of this last ones to hatch look quite a bit weaker. They are in the bater still getting dry and fluffy and getting some more strength. Of the 26 that hatched 5 are feather necked all the rest are NN and a good many, the majority appear to be NaNa. I haven't counted but think it is about 50/50 for Fm, and don't know yet about Sc, that usually takes to 1 week old for me to be able to see clearly enough on those tiny tiny legs.

Cute chicks!
If you don't *see* naked on the neck, then they didn't inherit the gene for Naked Neck AT ALL and can't carry it.

You could use the feather neck reds to cross back to birds that HAVE a naked neck and get naked necks. The percentages would be the same as if you were crossing out to a Rhode Island Red or other feather neck breed.

Those chicks do seem solid and sturdy. Be interested to see how they turn out.

I completely agree with what Lisa said. Feather necks= does not have/carry the gene in any way. Surprised he said that but bits of incorrect or misinformed tidbits are pretty common even amongst experienced people. Some of them seem to be hold overs from before the Internet age when information is so accessible.

Congrats! as for Sc, could try a magnifier or take digital pictures at the highest resolution download them then look at their legs with the pictures at full size. (yeah that was a hint for piccys, ha!)

Here are some pics just really quickly, not all of them half or so are still drying.

These are 3 of the feather necked ones

The one on the far right has interesting head markings from a diff. angle they almost look like false owl eyes.

again feather necked, they hatched first and are the dryest and most active

This little one is beyond jet black and has black skin, but is feather necked, I thought when it was more wet that it was a NN she is from one of the hooda's

two NN, the far one is Fm

Gary's large purple hen for the babies. They LOVE it.
