Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Shrink wrapped chicks are a problem for me also. I gave my Brinsae 20 away, not liking the design which requires an external rocker. But I still have problems with dryness.
Sounds as if you chicks are doing better than mine.

I love the ease of the brinsea, and really like the external rotating, makes me feel like I'm doing something to help it all along. Love how easy to clean, love the rock solid temps and humidity, once it is set, it is set no putzing at all involved. But really hate hatching in it.

What do you use now? Do you like it?

I used a little giant type/generic this summer but, no I do not really care for it since I was able to have a broodie pair sit on a clutch for Lisa. Ha !

Having a broodies solved all my problems as they also teach the new chicks. Also it is not necessary to use a light to keep them warm since "mom" takes care of that also. So I guess I am out of the hatching business.

how big is your flock now ?

Way to big, but many are on borrowed time! I think it is near 50 like 45 ish, but 2 of those are going to my FIL when he is well enough to leave the hospital, and of the 20 ish young ones only 3 or 4 are staying, the rest are heading to the crock pot, and if I can get enough hard core chicken keeping going on many of my 3 year EE will be heading to the crock pot this fall. I really want a core of 15 ish good quality layers/breeders to keep as the core, then the grow outs of around 20ish at a time so the flock is rotating out w/ constant layers / breeders and constant meat source.

All sc carrying females are staying regardless, and until I have enough carriers the most naked females of the NN, my plan is to have all carriers as layers / breeders. I was wanting to maintain two types the EE and the NN, but had to do some real soul searching to decide what I really, really want and that is Naked chickens, so I am phasing out the EE for the NN. I just really don't have enough room for both, I will likely keep a couple of the EE for their natural life, the ones who have wormed their way in my heart further.

Kassaundra nice synopsis of your flock. And the new chicks are delightful. You always take good pictures. Sometimes I look through your albums.

Yes well why not NN/EEs that is what I have from Lisa and will try to continue them but not in great number. I just do not want as many as I have now which is half as many as you have. But in order to breed for a sc trait I am sure you need at least 15 or more. But your plans sound good enough.

These two ladies (power of positive thinking) weren't suppose to hatch until Tues, yet here they are this morning, they hatched last night, in a hurry to see the world. There is one more in the bator, she just hatched though and was still wet. 16 more eggs to go.
Ohh my how cute are they!!!

I'm so jealous over here. Anyone willing to sell me some eggs???

Pweeeease???

I spotted a TNN at my feed store, I'm new to this breed and welcome any tips for caring for my new chick. are they at risk of sunburn? Winter gets below zero celsius but no snow (south Australia) can they handle the cold? what age can they usually be sexed?
