Totally loving allllll the cute baby pics! Dying for some over here. I contacted one of the 4H leaders and she said she has 1 kid who raises the nn's but he won't sell them to anyone in the state b/c his are nice show birds and he doesn't want the competition. Uhmmm....my kids aren't IN 4H, never have been, and will never be. I didn't say it to her like that, but just said that they aren't in it and don't have any interest. But she still wouldn't give in. Oh, well. The search continues... sigh.

so i found a roach today and i killed it and then gave it to the chicks, but the chicks just looked at it like if it was a monster haha. i poked at it with my finger to encourage them to eat it but they just looked at me like if i was crazy.

When I am the broody mom it takes a couple of minutes to convince the first one it is food, after that they will smooth take fingers off to get them. This time w/ the broody mom chickens it was easy no convincing needed. I brood on dirt floor so even when I am the broody mom the chicks get their first dubia at less then a week old.

It is easier to convince them it is food if it is still alive, I generally incapacitate them at first, until the chicks understand then it isn't nessecary.

Some have trouble telling at that age, just the other day I was looking at my own and I had separated the cockerels in 1 pen and I had a pullet in there.
I also noticed that the nn cockrels i got from you feather out around the necks way faster than the pullets have you noticed this too

If you post pics we migh be able to help a little

Kev, what kind of rooster would you pair her with?

I'd take the easy way and get a buff rock roo lol.. solid buff, yellow legs, no white on lobes.

Buff orp can work, the only issue is white skin. If yellow legs is important to have and buff rocks are too hard to find, buff orp is still 'do-able', need to hatch a lot of second generation chicks to hit on enough yellow legged NN chicks. All of the first generation chicks will have white legs.

Other than that- try to use a black tail buff roo with as little black as possible on him- the biggest challenge will be cleaning black from the tails, so a roo with a lot of buff creeping up the tail feathers will be good. Worse choice would be a roo with solid black tail, lots of black striping in saddle/hackle and on the primaries.

ok, since this is my go-to place for advise, here goes again. I hatched some runner ducks on Tues the 27th. One of the ducks was stuck in the shell a long time and after it hatched, one leg was just straight out behind him. I taped it to the other one for a day. He can walk around, but when he tries to stand up tall, his one foot is so pointed inward that he trips and falls. What can I do to straighten out his foot? Can you describe how a splint should be used? I know this is a duck and not a NN, but I figured you guys have such good knowledge, that you would know! Thanks for any advise! And here is a photo of one of my favorite little ducks.
