Naked Neck/Turken Thread

today the nn chicken in my avatar died today. a big pallet fell on top of him and he died.

Sad to hear about this.

There are some people who think well, it's only a chicken but not I. I will soon be 65 years old and I still remember the loss of the first bird (NN) that belonged to me. My grand dad was going to cull him like so many others before and since but I had taken a 'shine' to this particular bird.

I was only about 6 years old then and to this day, I still think about the old rooster that followed me around like a dog for many years. I'm certain he's the reason that NNs are my all time favorite breed.

Hey NNers I have a silly question:

so my two surprise NNs are obviously by a NN meat rooster who was too scrawny to eat (yet)...but he's more or less colored like a black and red crowwing (red head feathers, red shoulders, black everywhere else) with bright yellow legs and a big ole walnut comb. The only hen in my pens old enough to have laid the eggs is a 1/2 Black Orpington with a single dose of Dominant White -- she's got grey legs, a tiny straight comb, and has the coloration of a splash silkie. I'm guessing these two are full siblings.

They were both hatched 'penguin' colored, with slate grey legs and yellow feet. They have white dots between their eyes and their beaks, and just a white feather or two JUST at the tip of their flight feathers.

So my question is: are they going to stay this color, or will they lose the white wing feathers or will they get more white as they shed out?

Much respect to what you said.. I grown up with chickens my whole life and when I was young we had a few NN's, then they died of old age and then we didn't have NN's anymore. I ordered NN's from a hatchery few years back to introduce NN's back into my flock and we had a rooster about 4 months old and we was attacked by a hawk/falcon. I saved him in time from the hawk or falcon attack and he managed to live about 1.5-2 months till he died of unknown cause. Won't ever forget him.

We Greeks are butchers and I am not afraid of killing anything for meat/eating but when I grow a bond to the birds I can't do it that's my dads job.

2 of 5 eggs hatched UPDATE : } First Ever NN chicks, Cute Beyond , they both have small bow ties, 1 has Brown stripe running down behind where crown will be. other has Poof of Yellow Ol man hair in back of head. never had NN Chicks B4 these seem more then Half naked.

Old man??? don't say that because that would make me and old woman, Nope won't believe that. Our birds keep us young.

Okay ya'll I was hoping this wouldn' happen but I'm pretty sure Ed my NN roo has frost bite on his wattles, they are swollen and are blk at tips, is this serious? do I need to do something or just leave them alone? first night when we had the -0 temps I did apply vaseline to his comb and wattles but second night when it was a little above 0 I didn't.

As long as it stays dark and dry and non smelly it is okay will dry out and fall off. Green, weepy, smelly is infected will need antibiotics and wound treatments.

I Have some Veterycin and thought once it warmed up into higher 30's I'd spray him good with it. Thanks Kassaundra when I first saw them this morning I was sick thinking they were really going to be a mess. I hope they don't get infected.

he was my favorite nn. he was so nice and at the bottom of the pecking order. i was hoping to use him to breed with because he had a nice temperment and he was pretty. i didnt want to burry him or put him in the trash so i gave him to a neighbor to eat. i thought it would be wasteful to leave a perfectly good chicken just sitting there.
