My latest hatching eggs went into lock down this morning due to hatch on Mond


Of the 14 in the first batch 3 are pullets, 2 more I'm hoping against hope (1 of those is futile hope the other a possibility) Really hoping for more girls in this new batch.

I know what you mean about needing girls.
This is the only NN (not full) that I've gotten to keep so far this year. I've hatched around 75/80 chicks (not all NN) this year, and they are selling about as fast as I pull them from the incubator. The next hatch I do I'm not going to let any go until I get my pick. I'm down to 5 NN hens and want to get up to about 12.

Oh I saw a pick of the Legacy! It would be interesting to have one, only thing is, we already have 2 roos, and I don't have more than maybe 3/4 acre in a residential area, but because we live right behind the zoo, I don't think anyone could complain! LOL those monkeys are so noisy and the pigs in the morning squealing, I don't think something as typical as a rooster is going to cause much ruckus.

My husband said he is afraid our neighbors may complain if we get more roosters, I told him if they complain I am complaining about all of their barking dogs. I get so tired of having a window open at night and hearing barking all night long. In fact the yorkies next door I swear never shut up. All night long it's constant barking. At least roosters only crow once the sun comes up lol.

Here's my latest pullet. Hatched on New Years Day.



I thinking that this is birchen color. Her comb looks like it is pushed down on her head, not quite but almost V.


Don't have a picture of mom. She is a little larger than a bantam ( not quite leghorn size), birchen colored crossbred hen. I'm suspecting cross of large fowl and a bantam (OEG), she is definitely part game.

does look birchen. Her comb is a rose. My guess is she has some wyandotte in her mix.

So in my flock I have both mottled and some barring, it is possible that many of my normal skinned birds actually have fibro genetically even though not visible and can pass it on, especially my head roo who is barred.

I had a female who had a barred parent, she didn't show it, but passed it to her son (Shakespear my head roo) since she and her female offspring were killed in the massacre and I only have the male w/ barring, it is my understanding that all barred offspring will have to be male, as it takes one gene to show barred in males and two in females. Is that right?

I would check chicks right after hatching for any traces of fibro. It's usually strongest at hatch or when very young, especially on birds with genes that mess with fibro expression. It's variable, can be a light greyish patches, or really crisp well defined black tiny spots anywhere on the body.

It takes only one gene to show barring, also sex linked but it's the reverse in birds- females are "XY" and males "XX" so females can only have one barring gene at most while males can have one or two.

Barring shows best on solid black chickens... generally weaker on red/buff background. It's barely visible on wheaten hens. Blue can really mess with barring, making it almost invisible. But not likely with blacks.

daughters can only get barring from fathers, they never get it from their mothers.

sons can get barring from either mothers or fathers, or both.

in a flock or pairs where all barreds are hens, then yes all barred chicks are cockerels.

if there is a barred roo, barred will show up in both sexes.

I AGREE! I am tired of the neighborhood dogs barking all night. I will usually bring my dogs in at night, they don't bark at night even if I do let them out, but because we have 3 dogs, we are the only ones on the block with 3, I am sure a finger would be pointed in my direction. Last night the monkeys were so bad, it had my dogs all riled up, non-stop barking starting at about 8 pm, so I brought them in early! Once they were inside, they were quiet and calm, but then I could hear the monkeys.

The only monkeys that I have luckily around here are my kids, and I believe my son has finally grown out of hanging off the shower curtain.

He better have at the age of 15 and 6 foot tall.
