Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I didn't know Riker was killed, so sorry, he was gorgeous. I liked him even more than Jaxom. Btw, was Riker your sc carrier?

Yes, Riker was the current carrier, but several of the up and comer boys carry also. I liked Riker's look too, but Jaxom, was my FAV it will take a lot to come up to Jax, and don't think I will ever get such a funky comb again.

I think Jaxom's color and skin color should be relatively easy to get and I think the same about the comb as you do.

Did that chick survived? I realy hope it is.

One more question. How many chickens do you have? Hens, chicks, roosters, since every time I see a pic of you it's new hen or chick.

I think you already know that I apsolutetly love your chickens and I don't have to say it anymore.

Jaxom would have been easy enough to reproduce, except most of the genetics that made him were lost (or very diluted) at "chickegedon"

No that chick did not survive found it dead this am. I set more eggs this year then ever for me, literally hundreds from spring until now. I think I've ended up w/ near or about 20 chickens.

In the main chicken coop there are now 27, this includes the older "grow outs" I did very little caponizing of these b/c I felt pretty sure I was going to need to replace the head roo (just a gut feeling nothing at the time I could put a finger on the reason) so a lot of those are boys who are about to make the short list or freezer camp. In that group I have to make some hard choices (size, fm (most of the fm boy are smaller), leg color (I hate yellow legs but those are my biggest boys usually), bow tie I like the smallest possible, but the fm and smaller boys or yellow legged boys seem to have the smaller bow ties.)

In addition to those 27 I have 2 broody moms w/ 3 chicks between them, a batch of 4 older chicks but not yet big enough for the main coop, Rudy and the 3 nakeds, oh and a batch of 7 cukoo marans chicks I got for the broodies when their eggs didn't hatch that they rejected, oh and almost forgot Reba my gimpy hen who lives w/ Rudy and the young ones. I don't usually keep gimpies, but she is the last pre-chickegedon survivor.

Sounds like a lot, but many are going to freezer camp in the coming couple of months.

It does sound a lot, but, just like you said you will be cutting down a lot. Are you going to keep the marans chicks or maybe cull or sell them? Are the 3 nakeds with Rudy girls or?

Jaxom was great and that's the fact. I have to say that I found that one lady that lives near me has similar very flock to yours. No funky combs, mottled gene, sc or fm but lots of birchen, pencilled, naked necks and some barring. Problem is that she does not want to sell eggs and I don't like the body tipe at all.

You still have Reba?!? I didn't know that! Give us few updated pics of her when you catch some time!

The little nakeds and Rudy got fall clothes today. This is the littles first clothing and they were not impressed. They will only need to wear them for 3 days this time though. Forecast shows 3 days w highs in the 70's, Rudy could have tolerated that well, but didn't want to chance the littles getting to chilled, and this gets everyone some clothing experience before they have to wear the bigger stuff.

Phil the nakeds are a little harder to sex, but I believe the two FM's are boys and the fuzzy one (Phylis) is a girl. I think the darkest fm boy is going to be bigger then Rudy.

I am going to caponize the male cukoos, they and any small females will likely go to freezer camp, if some of the girls are big I might keep them to add a little size to the flock.

Here is a pic of my two NN Turken hens. Raised as chicks together, having a sun bath.

Too bad we aren't a little closer. I have a couple extra of those colorful Aloha roosters that would help get you some very colorful chicks.

Discovered this afternoon that a 'possum got my Aloha Naked Neck rooster. So I'll have to use the two Alohas that I had picked out and pair one on them with my Aloha NN hen and my Mottled Partridge NN hen.

I've got a couple more Aloha roosters but not as spangled as my picks, one looks a lot like a Speckled Sussex, but probably not quite as many white spots as most Sussex.

I also have a solid red cockerel that is out of the Aloha stock, not saving him for myself as I have plenty of red already.

Then there are several younger cockerels here hatched late May. Black with gold, barred, red barred, red, Dekaware patterned.

I'd be glad to help you out on a rooster if you could get down this way.

Kassaundra, Are you going to keep that dark naked roo?
Can naked roos breed with feathered hens? Or they just don't do well?

About caponizing, are capons growing faster or bigger? Is there a big difference? I am seriously preparing to do it next year. But if I ever do it, I will have to do it on culled one first.

Absolutely keeping to dark naked roo. I will ai him in the spring if he has as much trouble mounting as Rudy does. Kev's naked boys have learned to mount and yes they can mount a feathered hen. Rudy tries but hasn't been able to figure it out yet.

Capons grow bigger yes, not ness faster. They stay tender longer so can be harvested longer. Have more fat, no crowing, no mounting, no fighting. Most do start w/ a dead bird first.

What about naked pullets? I guess that roos would hurt them if they try breeding.

I will have to search a bit more about caponizing. I still have time.
