Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Oh, he's so beautiful!!!!

You know, I had completely forgotten about that! When I was little, I used to run around outside and in the woods all the time, and got stung by yellow jackets a lot. My mother used to smoke (not heavily), and she would break an unlit cigarette in half and pull out the tobacco, wet it, and put it on the sting. It really does work well, as I recall. Makes me think a pack of cigarettes should be in my first aid kit (I have TONS of paper wasps that have decided that my house is theirs, and I've gotten multiple nasty stings lately...)

Those wasp sprays that shoot out in a jet really do work. I used to have waist length hair and had it in a ponytail when I ducked under a storage shed not knowing there was a full size paper wasp nest.. right above the door..... it was NOT fun because a bunch got stuck in my ponytail so they proceeded to sting me in the neck repeatedly...... could feel every sting sliding in and out.. my neck was so sore and numb for a week... The doctor warned me about possible reaction if there was another sting so ever since, a trip to get that wasp spray was in order for every sighted nest..

Yikes! That's awful! I was told that Desitin, the diaper ointment, helps, but I've never tried it myself. Have you considered tequila...or bourbon...?

Thanks for giving me an out on buying cigarettes! lol

Haha funny! I don't drink at all.. just never liked the drinks or wanted to, even as a teenager. They probably would work... TOO well.. as me on the floor after just one little sip...

Oh! I almost forgot....a while back I posted some photos of a "mystery chick", asking if anyone could guess what breeds may have been mixed together to result in this unusual bird. Well, I still don't know for certain what his genetic makeup is, but he's turning out to be a really lovely but unusual cockerel...outstanding disposition towards humans, but very attentive of the ladies, and most definitely a dominant personality. I'm seriously thinking of crossing him with some of the NN girls just to see what the offspring turn out like...a fun little experiment. This is how he looks at roughly 15 weeks:

Do I remember they were supposed to be dorkings? A dorking-polish cross would produce a bird exactly like him- he has extra toes, right?

Oh, yeah, I have three cans in rotation. It's just that it seems that every time I knock one nest out, another is built within a day or two - and this is at about 7 points around the eaves of the house. It's a battle.

LOL! I'm like that with alcohol too. We occasionally have ONE drink, but never in public and only rarely even at home. Neither of us ever took to alcohol and I've seen far too vividly the side effects of enjoying it to much. I guess I'm just too much of a control freak. Still...it seemed like a viable suggestion.

You remember correctly! I can totally see a Dorking-Polish cross. He looks to me like he's got the Dorking tail, extra toes and maybe the body formation with the possible exception of the leg length. He's a little shorter than my Barred Rock cockerel of the same age, but heavier. I was really surprised by how much breast meat he already has.

It's normal. :)

Also they can blush, don't worry if you happen to see very sudden reddening that goes away later. Both sexes can do this.

Very normal. By the way I've also seen pullets get really red like that. I'd say you're probably right though if ? He ? Is a he by being built the way you described.

LOL! I remember how very freaked out I was when my NN checks started showing the red around their ears. I was convinced I had done something terribly wrong to make them unhealthy and would lose the whole flock. I guess that's one of the most obvious reality checks with this breed....you see everything, whereas fully feathered breeds hide everything. I think I've learned more about chickens from this breed than from all of my other birds combines. And as you've thankfully already been told, it is completely normal. Looks like a lovely little chick there! I think you should name him "Tiny".

Thanks, everyone! From its distribution, I figured it was normal, and they're really healthy with a clean brooder/food/water (at great effort on my part, of course - sigh), but I thought it would be best to ask just in case. He's already got his comb getting bigger along with the slow wings/tail feathering, so I'm 95% sure he's a boy. (I'm tracking my guesses week to week along with weights to see how well I can tell early). If not, he's a big girl, and I'll call her "Brick House" (Thanks to hellbender for the idea).

If not, there are a few of the "puppies" (there are about 4 or 5 that come running to me) that look to be females (by rapid feathering and tails) that are over 5 ounces - one of them may get the "Brick House" name if she's a keeper...

I'm looking forward to see how he develops and what his other characteristics are - he's not one of the "puppies", but he's sweet and relatively calm. The NH boys occasionally want to chest bump him. He puts up with it (he wins...). All these NN are so wonderful...

I know I'm late to the party, but if you get stung or bit by insects you can try hydrocortisone. Betamethasone works a lot better, but I think it is by prescription only (unless you go to Mexico and by it there). Put a dab on the sting/bite and then cover it with a bandaid so the medicine doesn't rub off on your clothes. I've been using Betamethasone cream for years since I'm severely allergic to mosquitoes. It is awesome!
