Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Ahhh I see, maybe talking directly with them and see about the show potential? Maybe one color has better type or ???
Yeah :)

I personaly, would get white ones. I love white chickens.

Okay, thanks :)
I have a bunch of White Birds and they (Chanteclers) stay as clean as can be, provided adequate care and space is at hand. If I were going to EXHIBIT any of them, even with their very clean natural appearance, a bath with the proper shampoo would be in order, likely the day before the exhibition.

I always bathe my chickens before shows.

Hello! I don't think I've posted on this thread before, but I love Turkens! I had one, but unfortunately she was a victim of a hawk attack several months ago :( However, I hope to order some more from Turnland Poultry. Do you think it would be better to get the White or Red Turkens? I haven't decided yet :)

Personally I love Turkens no matter what their color and am finding that I have a tendency to collect them and breed them to expand upon the color variety, but if I were in your shoes I'd probably choose white just because they're so much harder to find. I'd LOVE to have a white NN. There's something so elegant about a white chicken, and on Turkens those limited white feathers make them look like they're dressed up for winter or something.

Yeah, I agree :)

I'm confused about the Birchen vs Copper.

Copper Marans have brown heads and hackles.
Birchen Marans have white heads and hackles.

There is a distinct difference between the phenotype of the two breeds.

Ironically, one of my Turken Marans pullets ended up with sliver lacing on her head and neck instead of copper. Maybe there is a different modifying gene that she inherited from the rooster.

Same gene the only difference between copper and birchen marans is the coppers are gold while the birchens are silver.

Same thing with buff and light brahmas.... only difference is the latter has silver. (just in case- the silver gene 'represses' gold pigments from being laid in the feather, causing them to be black and white patterned)

That's all part of the nomenclature mess in the hobby. Technically, the coppers are Gold Birchen and the "birchen" are Silver Birchen.

All that means is the father of this pullet is either silver or genetically half gold/half silver at the very least. Silver is a sex linked gene so it means she had to get her white(due to silver) detailing from her father.

I'm told the rooster was a golden duckwing, so he had a silver and a gold gene. I wish the marans came in more colors...I'm getting tired of black. Time to get a splash or some blues!!!

Hey I almost said "golden" but changed mind in fear it would make my attempt at genetics explanation even more confusing lol

I remember that beautiful rooster...
