Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm very sorry for my incredible powers! Next time I will

Unless I see a bunch of the desired sex... ;)

Get a picture of that comb if you can. Never saw anything besides single comb from hatchery stock, so if it's really something else it would be quite the exception.

Fascinating how all the peaks and valleys are similar for all three chicks. Do they correspond to a change in environment or diet?
Actually, the X axis represents 13 different chicks, and each line is a subsequent week's weighing - so the peaks are actually just individual chicks who are growing faster than the others (Tank is the one in the middle). I know, it's a pretty non-standard way to represent the data, but I thought it was interesting looking. After the 4 week weighing I'll have 4 data points for each, and I'll give each one it's own proper growth curve line...

I got photos of the chick with the different comb (I am very unpopular now). I have zero in-person experience with non-single combs, but I think it's a rose comb from example photos I've looked up. It's only become obviously different in the last several days.

There were two attempted jail-breaks within a couple hours today, Tank being the instigator (found them standing on top of the net on the brooder on my way out the door, and then again when I walked in). These chicks are BEYOND ready to move outside...

I'll let Kev do the 'splainin' but as mentioned, I intend for all my birds to eventually have rose, pea or other come type than straight because it fits my desires in many ways.

Got a few pictures today of some of my flock.

This is Mister Bo Spangles he is a Spangled Aloha. He will be helping me in my endeavors to help create my Calico Naked Necks. I have selected 3 hens for him for the New Years Hatch. In addition to the hen in the next picture will be with my Mottled Partridge Naked Neck hen, and a Gold-buffish Red Naked Neck from the Aloha eggs I received from @alohachickens

My Aloha Naked Neck hen that will also help me in my Calico NN program. I didn't get a shot of the other two hens.

Here is my Red Pea Comb rooster he dies have 1/4 Easter Egger blood in him hence the pea comb. He will have four if my foundation hens as mates for the New Years hatch.

Next is my young Columbian Naked Neck rooster (yes he will have a little red leakage).

His mother was a Columbian NN by my Salmon NN rooster. I have him set up with a Blue Red hen and three following three hens for the New a years hatch.

This us my only surviving Aloha hen she is a Buff Speckled Aloha. I'm not sure if I will be able to get mottled chicks from her and the Columbian rooster ( his grand sure was a mottled carrier). But maybe the chicks will be carriers.

My only White Naked Neck she was bred by me by the Blue Red(Copper) rooster of mine out of a White NN hen. She and her mother have black splotches throughout their feathering.

A solid black hen. She dies have a naked neck. The front is nearly fully feathered but naked on the back. Three generations if my breeding decisions in this hen. Her sure was a Black Jersey Giant. The next picture is of her mother:

A dominant white and wheaten split. She lays green eggs.
The next picture is of the grandmother:

This one was a splash something some kind of mix of salmon and buff. She was by an Easter Egger rooster out if a Buff Naked Neck hen.

The above hen was a half sister to the grandmother of the Columbian NN rooster picture above. So I'm going to have a bit of line breeding going on here.

This last picture is of a Black Crossbred hen I breed. She is the mothers if a few if the chicks that I posted last time. She is 1/2 Black Jersey Giant 1/4 each of Easter Egger and Production Red.

Yes she is a little worn on the back seems to have been a favorite among the previous rooster and the current one she's with. She will be put with the Mottled NN rooster if mine for the New a years Hatch.

I'm trying to get the chickens together for the New Years hatch but I'm waiting for a little maturity o. Some if the younger hens because the rooster that will ran with them is a little randy and they aren't quite ready for that yet.
When I get them together ill try to take a few more pictures.

So, I know fiddly-squat about combs, comb-types, etc. What are the implications of having a rose comb in a Naked Neck?

Well.. it depends on what you want/care about. If purity/meeting the standard then this one is a cull. The most likely explanation is someone let a NN breed with a rose-combed-something. Could be a cross, could be generations back but honestly I have never seen a hatchery stock NN with anything besides single so that chick is a big surprise to me.

Years ago there was some talk about getting rose combs accepted into NN standard but it was pretty controversial.

However it seems rose comb in NN can be locally common/typical in other countries.

Other than that, it is purely a matter of personal taste. Some love it, some hate it.

Genetically the only thing it does is make some rose combs a little more naked(larger areas of skin- many of my rose combed Nn seem to have larger naked areas around the crop and shoulders plus bowtie being a little smaller).. other than that, no other obvious effect.

p.s. rose comb is a simple dominant. easy to get rid of or easy to keep floating around if desired. It cannot be hidden- does not float hidden and 'pops up'.

That's a very eye catching hen!

Thanks and she really is eye catching. Have several people wanting to buy her. I told them they'd have to wait until I get babies from her.

She looks like some that Sommer aka @alohachickens posted over on the Aliha thread. She came from eggs from Sommer.
