Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hmm!   The welsumers I had laid good size eggs. Not huge but not so small.  They laid interesting color eggs- either like the terra cotta pots or an unusual shade of red.. many also had dark spots.  The problem was they had very poor heat tolerance.. the roosters would drop dead from heat stroke when it got hot.. pullets did fine but some of the older hens did have problems with the heat.. had to give up on the breed.

Beard is pretty easy to get rid of- it's dominant so once you don't see it, it's totally gone.  One way to tell on NN if they have beard gene or not is if their wattles are really small, but this works best on single combs because pea combs also reduce the wattles.. usually you can reasonably tell which ones have beards even if pea combed by checking the feathers on their faces.

Their eggs had good color and with the speckles in them ( the Welsuumers). We had a line before that laid mostly large eggs. These however must have come from a different line. Small eggs.

The most beards in my flock right now are on three hens that are EE/NN crosses that look like Easter Eggers. I suppose that is where the beards come from. Looks then like most of the chicks are theirs then. Doesn't matter because any pullets I'll be using for breeding more NN's.

How do you load videos on here? I've got some but when I hit the button I use for pictures they videos doesn't show to upload.

However, I'm leaning towards pea combs since I find the big floppy legbar combs extremely unattractive. I love my legbar-turken hen, but her comb repulses me and I'd never keep any of her chicks that hatch with a single comb. Most of my Ameraucana/legbar crosses have a modified comb, but her's is wildly huge.

I love beards on all birds! None of my turkens have beards. They are all totally cleaned faced. I'm a little jealous of bearded NNs.

He should be able to if his rumpless-ness does not give him too much trouble breeding.

I did find it sometimes necessary or helpful to trim feathers around the vent on the rumpless birds. So try that if the eggs are coming up infertile.

do you trim males or females?

Haha!

Yeah not a fan of floppy combs either. I think it's genetic.. as small combs still can flop over. No idea on the genetic inheritance mode though. However is she also showing a trace of crest? Crest is well known for messing up combs so maybe once it;s removed, the combs may improve if that's the cause in your birds?

I've done both. There were some roosters that seemed infertile... until he was trimmed then he was fertile for life, no repeat trimming necessary. Suspect in those cases, the roosters thought they were going through the motions fine.. but after trimming, they get the light bulb over their heads, ha...

Some hens have long feathers on their back so when the rooster is sitting on her, it might press flat down over the vent area, preventing direct cloacal contact. It was not necessary on all hens but a few did need regular trimming if I wanted fertile eggs out of them..

The search is on for another rooster, 'possum got my big red pea combed NN last night.

Hoping to located another NN but not holding out for much hope. May try to get a year old half Marans and half something else from my son-in-law. I know his stock it came FTP. Mine. They run with a neighbor of his red part game hen. Just going to borrow him until after my Hanuary hatch. I should have done mature cockerels by the time I need a rooster for tge Easter Hatch.
You need a good live trap and a 'possum recipe book.

Took some quick pics, been working on a new design for the clothes, I really like this design so far, but need to see how it wears

I have a few pics of this multicolor girl, wondering what you guys think this color / pattern is going to be, different from any others I've hatched.

Phyllis the cutest girl ever w/ a sole patch.

Here is that girl again, better shot of the color mix, hard to see in the pic but that is "brown" black and white

I think this boy will end up bigger then Rudy.

Takes a real man to pull off pink pants.

Pretty sure this one is a girl
