Naked Neck/Turken Thread

You said no project birds. Are you Looking for the APA standard colors? What are your goal with the Naked Neck?

Folks might can help better if they know what your goals and exactly what your looking for.

I have shipped eggs before and would do so again, but alas all mine are basically project colors.

Just keep checking back in the for sake section and the 2 auction threads.
A lot depends on how many hens are in the run/coop. I usually never try to put just one at a time in. I. My runs there are usually 5 to 8 hens in there if I add any ( usually not) I try to add about 3 at a time.

I've been told its best to put them in at night while they are at roost. I usually move mine at feeding time, partly because the others are trying to get at the feed, and partly that's the best time for me. I feed in the afternoons.

Chickens are like children at school. The new kid arrives and all the kids that have been there forever together usually pick on/at the new one until order ( pecking order) is distinguished. I have never had a hen seriously injured really bad when moving them around, other than a bit of blood from the comb maybe.

Totally agree that at least two hens need to be added together, three is better.

Thanks!
I'm kicking myself now because i saw an ad in early summer for Turken chicks for $3 each, right near where I live. I hadn't decided then which way I wanted to go, and missed the opportunity.

You might need to wait until springtime. Most birds are seriously slowing down on laying at this time of year due to molting and shorter daylight hours.

I'm not looking for any specific color or standard, no. Just remember how sweet our 3 bantie girls were and good mommas too. I like variety, I don't mind "painted" birds, they are more unique in my world anyway. Splash them please, give them some lacing too, I love the diversity and the colors! I'm not a breaded, I just enjoy their company and gifts alike! My girls, also learn from them and we are all helping each other out in some way. We are raising for meat, eggs and always for companionship. We pick out the dinner table ones early and set to it, and the same with the pets, but they both get the same love and care we just know from the start what is what and thank them for it every step of the way.

I keep turken! But my girls are all molting.. My double dose hen is nearly done so should resume laying soon. Will holler when I know she resumes laying.
I'm counting on your hen jchny2000!

Yeah, I just thought someone might have some feathered out juvies available. I'll just have to be patient I guess. Not one of my strong points.

they have been next to each other for about 2 months, only a wire is between them, but my roos are not gentle and my golden comets and isa browns are mean. I will wait for a month (they are about 5 mo), they might fight back if they are bigger.

Yikes! NNs are usually pretty docile compared to other breeds. The rest of your flock may just be too aggressive for her. That said, I would listen to @draye about this one...the voice of much greater experience than I possess. Maybe introducing two or three at a time will do the trick. Good luck!

Photo of my "Puppy" - do you think the white accents might mean mottling?

I'm off to get weights. Wish me luck - they're getting to be a handful!!!!!

Like the other responses, I've seen this and they ended up non-mottled. Except she has a few very white feathers on her head, can't recall seeing that on my birds. I need to go re-read what Alohachickens said, there was a mention of white feathers on the head being a hint or??

cute shoes btw. NN really should start to show up in chicken themed materials!

Today the babies are 6 weeks old. I caught two or three this morning flying out and roosting on top of the brooder.

So today the partition ( the short wall ) is coming down. They will get full run of the barn area ( sheltered area ) from tonight on.
I threw them out into the run area to let them get some sunshine ( good old Vitamin D ) and learn about scratching in the dirt. As long as there is no rain I'll be putting them out in the mornings. Barricading them in the shelter at night.

This is their first time outside. They've been on the ground inside the brooder room since hatch, so not their first time on the ground.

Yes, most are docile, but I've had a few of them heifers that can me down right mean, even toward their humans. I will grant though its usually when they're trying to set. There was one who would try to tear me apart for just trying to get eggs from under her while she was just laying an egg. I quit trying to fetch eggs under a laying hen from then on.

I have three NNs that are sisters. I only kept the 3 of them so they were raised together without any cockerels or any other birds. For some reason they are very aggressive towards other animals. They chase cats and beat up on other chickens. I hope they mellow out a bit as they get older.

I have 1 NN pullet who is very bossy. nevertheless all the others in her coop seem to adore her.

I've been working on the nakeds rain / winter coats this week. It has been a long week and I just barely got them finished. My dog has been real sick had emergency surgery then other complications. The new meds today are helping a lot and have made it where I could have time and space to work on the coats. They all fit and I think the concept is going to work. If anyone wants to know it takes one full size mattress cover to make 4 coats.
