Naked Neck/Turken Thread

OK, Kev, I have a question triggered by your mention of blue-laced wyandottes. I will be getting some chicks in the spring. Specifically, the entire purpose for the order is to get high quality German New Hampshires to breed, pure and to cross with NNs. But there is a minimum order of 20 chicks, so I have some other options to fill out the order rather than getting 20 NHs if I want, and if I plan ahead, I could push that up to 30 in a pinch (though that's a stretch) - understanding that more of any breed gives me more options for both straight-run mitigation, as well as selection of the better ones. All very high quality birds - this is a highly reputable breeder. I will definitely be getting some blue or black copper marans (sucker for the dark egg - but which would be more interesting color wise for crossing? I confess to being a sucker for anything blue, but know that blue genetics is complicated). I am considering a few of some other of the following and would be interested in your opinions as far as possibilities for interesting color from NN crosses:

Wheaten ameraucanas (or lavender ones)
Blue laced red wyandotte (SOOOOOOO GORGEOUS!!!!!)
(There are also good quality barred rocks, but I'm not so interested in those).

(I have Cream Legbars - pets, including hatchery pullets but a high quality/breeder cockerel - but they have a small body so I'm not as interested in that cross - thought the Ameraucanas would be bigger and still give me green eggs, just not the straight combs of the CLs.)

Caveat being that I do NOT intend to ever sell birds, eggs, or meat, so the need to keep any line pure or marketable is not an issue - just not interested in that, and I also think I've got a CL pullet with isolated ocular Mareks, so I'm assuming all my (vaccinated) birds are carriers. (Though eggs are technically safe, I suppose.) The source for this order does not vaccinate, but breeds for resistance, so there's also the possibility I may have some of my own "breeding for resistance" I may need to do if any fall ill. I'm aware of that risk, and am just going to suck it up and keep an eye out. Eventually, any birds on my property are going to need to be resistant.

(I AM really going to start reading up on the color genetics, but it'll take some time to get up to speed, and also reading is no substitute for experience.)

I like the idea of breeding to resistance. that's why I will try to hatch and raise chicks with broodies only.

Gotcha. I do notice myself getting very bored with too many of a specific color and getting excited when a different one shows up.

is the sex link roo red/white? red sexlinks have dominant white, easy to make crazy patterns with them, breed with red or brown chickens like red duckwing for red pyles.

hopefully the white hens are hiding different genes for colors or patterns... good luck with the hatch!
my red sex link is my avatar.
this is my broody (she hatched 1 light brahma pullet in june). her sister is totally black.

this is my araucana boy (started to crow!):

moving the broody didn't succeed. I moved the nest with the eggs to the place she chose and separated it so the other hens will not disturb her. she has been sitting for a few hours. fingers crossed!

Grandma's naked neck turken started laying two days ago. We didn't weight the egg becaouse she layed it during night on the roost. Egg dropped and broke. That also happened this last night.

Oh this pic helps a lot! He definitely is duck winged.

I'm tentatively guessing him to be e^b and having Db.. not totally confident. He is not anything like the colors listed on the chicken calculator page you linked to earlier.

Fingers crossed too for the broody success!

Here are pics of my 4 boys at the top of my need to decide list (who stays as head and who stays long enough to hatch eggs from)

I LOVE how dark fm this boy is, he is also the slightest build of all the roos. Even though he is smaller I am really thinking about penning him w/ the fm girls and hatching eggs, and quite possibly keeping him as a secondary roo????

This is Pie, the almost certain new head roo. He is the biggest and you guys said he is mottled, do you still think so? Even though his comb looks single it is not it is split in the back into a dainty "leaf" comb. (dainty b/c it is only split a short ways about 1/4 of the total length of the comb)

This is the second fm boy, he is slightly bigger in frame then the first one and has more white showing. Is there any genetic reason you guys can think that I should choose him over the darker fm?

This guy is slightly smaller then Pie, but bigger then the two fm boys. Not sure what is going on w/ his color / pattern genetically. He is my first roo w/ a top knot. Can you see any genetic reason I should choose him over either Pie or one of the fm boys? Or should match him w/ some girls to hatch some eggs before he gets culled. Keeping in mind my limited space for boys.

Now just a few of the ladies, I was concentrating on the boys so I didn't get many of the girls

She was posing just to cute not to click.

I love the coloring of this girl

I have a couple of girls w/ this patterning, it is prettier in person, not quite a lace / almost a bar?????

One of the fm girls, I have several w/ this color and several black or birchen

I have a couple like this, she is barred, right??? If she were matched w/ a mottled w/b boy (Pie) would / could their offspring be tri mottled?????

I'd be hard pressed to let any of them go! But I do understand your space constraints.
