Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Goodness that is a great price, especially for gamebird feed! Sad it;s vegetarian though. My birds did really well on gamebird feed also- great growth and egg production. I'll try to remember checking the gamebird feed for animal protein the next time. I've kind of been thinking if it does, get one bag and mix it with the layer feed and see how it goes.

Yeah BOSS is not so cheap here either.. the cheapest I could find were 19 for 40 pound bags.

Go with what works for you! I wish I could do the same but oh man too many birds and too many pens..... need something in bulk and dry to mix in with their regular feed.

did you try to grow sunflowers from the seeds? a feed store on my island just brought boss and my chickens love it. I am thinking to plant some seeds near the fence so it will not me disturb at all and I might get some seeds for free.

Nice birds!  I am not too sure as their shade of brown is different from the typical NN in the States.  Do you know if they were cream colored as chicks or had stripes on their backs?

Cream/yellow down all over,  that is wheaten..   if they had very clear stripes down their back or were dark brown all over that's probably darkbrown(eb in genetics lingo)

By columbian, if you meant white rooster with black tail and on neck too, if he is pure for silver(the cause behind his white body) then very likely all chicks would be columbian also.    If he is not pure for silver, then half will be columbian and half similar to the hens above.

by the way over here chickens with too high of tail are called squirrel tail.

The brown ones had dark brown stripes as chicks. I really like tgeir coloring and am happy because I know that I will get more because my rooster isn't pure for columbian-no black feathers on the neck, just on tail, and has some yellow.

Does the black girl carry the mottled gene? She has white tip on both wings and white feathers under them.

I am not an expert in nutrition but I do have some experience. I was vegetarian for 11 years till I got some nasty virus that literary ate my blood. my doctor told me to eat some red meat as soon as possible or i would die. I didn't want to but when I got worse I had no choice.

That is why I we don't even think about becoming vegetarians. We are simply not made to be them. One simple proof for that are our teeth. If we shouldn't eat meat, we would have different teeth. Maybe a bit stupid fact, but it gives us simple answer.

That sounds like dark brown(eb)

If the rooster is wheaten under his columbian pattern, the chicks will come out cream or cream with minimal striping and show strong tendency to be columbian or black tail browns with variations in how much markings they get as they mature. If you are not too happy with the color, keep a son and breed it over brown hen, from this there will be some browns.

Without knowing what are in the parents, there might be surprises like some coming out exactly like those hens or....

Some white is common enough in non-mottled blacks plus mottling is not exactly rare, not exactly common enough to make it a big question mark.... she could be a black that happens to show a little white(is not mottle carrier) or really is a mottle carrier. The only way to find out is to breed her with a mottle(if she is a carrier, then half of the chicks will be mottled) or mottle carrier rooster(just 1/4 mottles).

I have given up on gardening.. if the heat or cold does not kill a plant, the gophers will kill it. I try to keep my yard as weed free as I can but the next door neighbor lets the weeds go wild so there hundreds of gophers in her yard(it is like walking on a sponge over there) and they tunnel over into my yard.

Made a raised bed with wire under it but it is so dry here it needs watering every day, not a good thing with the serious drought in California.

The only things that aren't weeds are some trees and poisonous bulbs- white squill(they used to make rat poison from it) and strangely they don't seem to bother pomegranate trees however last season all the fruits were totally spoiled by a strange bug with long legs. Fruit trees(apples, apricots etc) have been killed off long ago by borers.

It often feels like I'm being given so many signals not to consider plants anymore lol

I hope I will get some nice babys from these two, they are F1 NN and silkie cross:

I don't really know if he maybe is wheaten 'cause we hatched them from eggs that we bought, but the hen we hatched with him is wheaten, so it could be easily.

I also have other hen that I got from her that has even more white but it looks different, I will take a picture tommorrow, going to school now
