Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Then you definitely need to visit this little corner of the world. We've been enjoying record high temperatures this week and last week. It's supposed to hit 90ºF today with very low humidity. We've all been wearing T-shirts, shorts and flip flops.

and I was happy with 70 here! is that usual temperature for this time of the year?

possible. they come from a farm where they produce chicken both for meat and eggs. all of them are minimum 3 kg and good layers. all colours as well. although I have been told that they lay well for a year or two only. another problem is that they don't cope well with heat. I did loose my only big girl last summer due to heat. she was my best layer and I do miss her eggs. I am more prepared for this summer. I built a big porch in front of the coop and I have just made new nesting boxes. there is plenty of ventilation there.

Interesting.. that kinda sounds cornish-ish.

I got something similar last year, slow growing broiler chickens(Freedom Rangers) to cross with a line of NN. those chickens got really big.. weighed three pullets at 8, 10 and 11 pounds. They definitely cannot cope with the heat very well.. the two surviving hens are now a year old and they are so extremely fatty they waddle.. been waiting for them to start laying after their molt but they are taking forever... want to breed a NN-freedom cross rooster over them. but I am starting to wonder if they won't lay because they are way too fatty and 'too old' being broiler stock chickens...

I have pullets only so I will tell you in a year or so, lol.

I will take some pics of my girls tomorrow (they sleep now). the pullet I lost last summer looked like red ranger. my new girls are: wheaten, black with golden neck, red/mottled and buff/barred. the NNs are 2 white and 2 red. they all came from the same place, together with my avatar roo that looks like red sex link.

Me too..  lived up in the mountains for 2 years, the snow piled up to 4 feet..  never ever again....  the summers were awesome but I was so miserable for half of the yea up there.

you need to experience the summer time desert heat. It's very intense.

Yep, check out that link to see what they look like.

Here's what happens if you get too close....

They are absolutely vicious plants. They have sections like sausages that break off at the slightest touch and are really painful and hard to get off you.

Many times tourists get in trouble with those plants because they don't really understand how easy they get on you.. hence the "jumping" part of the name, it is as if they literally jump off the plant onto you.

If you see these.. walk very very carefully.. lol
