Naked Neck/Turken Thread

So today at the feed store I managed to remember to check for animal protein in the feed... the gamebird feed does not list it either. sigh.

They do have pond fish feed, 27 for a 50lb bag.... it has fish meal, porcine and beef meal plus bone meal. Almost got it but balked at the price and not knowing if the birds would even eat it...?

No fish meal. Turns out the feed store staff are not a fount of knowledge.... very nice folks but no real answers... one staff did say she would try looking into it- feed with animal protein or a bulk source for it.

I spent a good while in the dog/cat aisle at the grocery store reading the labels... almost tempting to think protein is protein after all, on almost all of them the animal protein was not in the top three. Except for kitten food, chicken was the first thing. Is the order really an indicator of the %? I feel like a noob here...

btw- the chickens really liked the kitty food. It's way too expensive as a permanent solution though, 8.99 for a little itty bitty bag..

Yes, even on pet food the listing is in order of most to least content.

I'm waiting for the day you start posting photos of the roadkill you picked up to feed to your chickens.

Oh my goodness you don't know how many times I drive by road kill thinking of how I might be able to use it. :hide.

I've tried the black soldier flys without much luck. It's either too hot or too cold not enough moisture or something

Trying earthworms now. Some of the chickens eat them some don't.

As for McM stock,  I have no idea of the quality of their current stock.   My very first one came from them and she turned out to be a huge hen, excellent layer.  However that was 25 years ago or so.   The second batch from them maybe 5 years after her did not turn out as huge, they still were good sized and were good layers.    I forgot to ask at the feed store today where the chicks came from, the ones I picked up last fall were surprisingly small(to me, still havent weighed them yet) but they seem to be good layers.  (purely a guess, due to location, I doubt the chicks come from McM)

If the chicks are straight run, get a mix of big/heavy and not so big/heavy as there might be a chance the bigger ones are males, although there often are some girls that are good bit heavier than the others.

Get a mix of bowties also..   some prefer the big bowtie look, others are all about the tiny/no bowties.  Almost assuredly, there will be a bunch of ;nicest looking' chicks with big bowties.. it is up to you to pass them over or give them a try.

Chances are very good you will see an extremely high number of big bowties.   If there are only 10 chicks, it can be they're all big bowties...

If you happen to see no bowtie chick, grab it.  Those are kinda rare and there is somewhat a demand for these from people who breed NN...  most of the time I don't see a single case of this in the feed store chicks, however I did get a few in last fall's group.

This feed store is in an area that chickens are utilized for both eggs and meat, so they tend to bring in quite a few chicks at a time. I'm hoping for a large variety to pick from if I can get there first.

I did think about grabbing the largest and hoping for a few hens. If I remember right they only had straight run last year.

You should have seen the look on the kids face when I asked if they were getting any NN chicks this year. Then the manager who is getting to know me says yes the Turkens will be in at Easter and tells me to call at the beginning of the week to verify the date. I'm hoping to get him to hold some of the better ones for me.

Do they grow faster than non NN

I planted a persimmon tree in the chickens run. while I was digging all of my chickens were in the hole eating earthworms, lol.

I get more eggs than I need so I boil them and feed my chickens for more protein. that is the cheapest thing I can think of.
