Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Lavender is a single and recessive mutant gene. It dilutes both black and red/gold pigments. It breeds true, not like the blue with its black/blue/splash genetics.. lavender bred with lavender breeds all lavenders.

For solid lavender like my chicks, you need a solid black chicken then add lavender.

There are too many names for lavender on other color patterns.. Isabel(usually a lavender on a buff bird), Isabella, porcelain, etc.. I don't know the Greek name for this gene/color... will try showing more pictures

Mille fleur d'Uccle(no lavender) Porcelain d'Uccles(exact same color except lavender is added) See how the lavender dilutes all colors to a soft pastel shade:

mille:

porcelain- exactly the same color and pattern as above but with lavender "added":

Isabella brahma- it is partridge with lavender added:

Isabel/isabella leghorn- brown or red duckwing pattern:

Isabel brahma- this one is a buff brahma plus lavender:

so I would need a lavender chicken to start with? I cannot find it here

Just finished the first candling of my incubated eggs. Only one of my three Biel girls provided me with fertile eggs, and she's the one that was most aggressively mated by my NN rooster, and a little less by my Ameraucana rooster. This could get interesting.

All three of my White Rock girls gave me fertile eggs, again either from the same two roosters and my Biel girls, or possibly by one of my Biel boys....not likely, but possible.

And the two NN girls I collected eggs also showed good development, so I'm hopeful and optimistic. :D

Awesome. :fl
I've set my project and Orpington's for the Easter Hal. First time around for them so interested in how they grow.

At least for now, I'm restricting the chickens to alternating paddocks, in order to let the ground recover and also have the option of planting specifically for them (forage wise). Otherwise I won't have any nice ground for them to graze pretty soon.

I just decided to let Apoc out. He's not in a paddock or anything, but I just couldn't face keeping him locked up any more. He'll likely scuffle through the fences, but I'm just going to let him do his solo thing. I have plans to give him the Cream Legbar pullets that aren't good auto sexing (and so aren't candidates for further CL breeding), so I can get NN CLs. But that won't be for about 5 months...

I know, isn't it totally evil?!

I wish I had more land. my chickens stay in the same runs, 1 is in the corner of my property and the other 2 attached to it and just about 3 meters away from my porch, lol. in the other corner next to the chicken's run I have a vegetable garden, next to it a covered car place and next to it my dogs confined place - dog's run, lol. the rest is my house with some land in front next to the street where I have 2 lemon trees and planted a pomegranate tree in the corner. I yesterday planted sunflowers, cucumbers and some zucchini in the corner with the pomegranate tree, next to the fence. so I don't have room for a flea left.

I am glad apoc is free again

and he is going to get married as well!

KEV beautiful birds, what is the source of the pictures ? Were they all yours or did you import the photos for demonstration.

I had some porcelain d'Uccles and they were very pretty but very flighty. Even I want more of this color just because you posted them. drat

DesertChic be sure to get those Lavender Australorp hatching eggs so we can share them some day !

A friend gave me a large trash bag full of wild mustard weeds and my flock made them disappear within and hour. I rarely let them out of their run since they also devour my garden boo hoo

my chickens eat wild mustard only if there is nothing else, lol.

good luck, waiting to see what pops out!

my surprise orpington boy is a puppy, lol. now I understand why people say orpingtons are lap pets.

My first Orpington rooster was far from a lap pet. I could not go into the cage without a plastic pipe at all times. Sometimes I could get in and out without him spiking me. Most times not. His son was a great pet. However the neighbors workers wanted him more than I. He up and disappeared one day no struggle no feathers nothing. I have the third generation now and he's ok just not like missing one was.

Woohoo! It'll be a fun surprise!
Quote: I set eight more Cream Legbar eggs for the Easter HAL - I didn't get pullets from Lissa in the last hatch, just two boys, and since Mareks killed Paula and I think Jenny may be on her way out, I am not sure I have time to wait before getting what offspring I want out of Lissa (though she's fine so far and is the strongest and best). I need more to be able to breed for resistance anyway.

Well, Apoc's freedom lasted all of 30 minutes. He made his way up to the Cream Legbar paddock and started picking a fight with Dumbledore - who was NOT going to back down. They began striking blows through the plastic fencing (not just posturing), and as it escalated, it became clear that no one was backing down and that I would need to intervene or there would be some serious first aid to render.

Sooooooo... Apoc is locked back up again. Serves him right for thinking Dumbledore's ladies are his to take. Silly boy.

Cohabitating roosters are NOT on the table here in my yard. (The whole reason Apoc is on his own is that when he was living with Tank, Tank was beating him up regularly, and it was getting worse. So I tried...)

I'll try again with these new chicks...

i have one rooster and two hens of the Legbar the chicks we're distinguishable for sexing but barely. When will the hens start laying

Mareks is an awful disease. Hard to watch

poor Apoc

cohabitation only works here when roosters are younger

Ideally, Cream Legbars should be easily auto sexed. If you hatch from yours, you should subsequently select for good auto sexing characteristics in the babies - at least the best you can get among your results. It's an important/key feature of the breed, but seems to be really easily lost. I have pullets that had fantastic auto sexing as chicks, and their chicks are also great. The other pullet (who has since died of Mareks) was not as clear, and sure enough, neither were her babies. She was a great layer, and a sweet bird, and her chicks are the most friendly. So they are going into hybrid/mix projects, rather than into the CL breeding group.

Paula (since deceased) began laying first at 25 weeks, the others were several weeks after that. So I almost died of shock when my naked Necks started laying at 20 weeks - I didn't even have nest boxes in there! Not sure how universal that is, but pretty sure they don't start laying early. Once laying, though, they've been very consistent and productive - I hope you have a line/strain like that.

I feel sorry for Apoc, REALLY hate to keep him locked up like that, but he makes a real pest of himself, and when I let him out into a paddock (I've tried that), he escapes very readily and makes a lot of trouble. He will need to be on his own until he gets his girls - he has a LONG wait (about 5 months).
