That's a great story! I love watching the hens put those boys in their place. I watched one of my White Rocks chase two much larger young cockerels away from herself and her besties yesterday. She puffed up to three times her size and chewed those boys out royally! They hid at the other end of the yard for about two hours after that.
I have my NN girl inside again. I don't know what happened but I found her outside the run with an injured leg. I think it is not broken but she is 3 kg and probably got hurt by landing on concrete. she couldn't walk. I gave her some sugar water for shock and aspirine for pain. about 10 minutes later I gave her 1/2 cup of grower crumbles and she ate it all. I put some more and fermented wheat on top and she ate all wheat and some crumbles as well. I assume she will be ok. at least I hope.
A friend gave me a large trash bag full of wild mustard weeds and my flock made them disappear within and hour. I rarely let them out of their run since they also devour my garden boo hoo
talking about chickens and garden? I didn't give anything green to my chickens so esmeralda decided she was big enough to take care of her treats. the next thing was a fun game called: who's gonna catch a flighty araucana, lol. the next question was: who's gonna get tired first?
the only good thing about this story is that she went to the corner where I didn't plant anything so she didn't mess up with my garden.
my aniela cannot walk but she can eat and make a mess like a pig, lol her leg hurts a lot but when I came with a duck egg she got up and made a few limping steps. she had 2 eggs, fermented wheat and grower crumbles. and she laid an egg, too. this is her bed inside the house. she spent day in a nursery as jumbo and emily are already big and stay with the other NNs in the run.
Well today I sold off all my littles. Decided to get rid of all the young ones because I set 112 eggs.
I will candle Saturday or Sunday and take out the non fertile ones.
I'll make selections for keepers when they hatch out, most likely 35 to 40 then sell off the rest.
A lot of these should be mottled to carry on my project. I also have 9 eggs set from my Green Egger project, hoping all are fertile and those all be keepers.
The runs have been rearranged in preparations for the next hatch, unless I get itchy to hatch I'll be hatching in September for my annual birthday hatch. My present to myself.

When my little NN pullet, Reba, hurt her leg it took her several days to start moving around normally. During that time I guess she really bonded with me because now she runs to me and wants to be held every time I stop outside and she follows me and talks constantly while I tend to water, feed, egg collection, etc. These birds really are amazing in the way they heal though. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your girls recovers quickly.
So far it sounds like she's doing really, really well!
Good news. I was doing chicken chores today when I heard egg song from a part of the yard where it didn't belong - almost sounded like it was in the neighbor's yard (neighbor doesn't have chickens). Sure enough, Puppy had gotten out AGAIN - every day for a while now, never sure how she got out of the paddock.
But wait, EGG SONG?! Sure enough, I found this:
I told her that I totally understood that she wanted to be a Mommy, but that I wanted her to finish high school first.
I cleared out her nest and put her back in, and this time I saw her get right back out - just flew right over a 6 foot net fence.
Anyhow, the good news part is that two of these eggs are double yolkers - so PUPPY is the one who has been laying these frequently. (She's fine, but not a specific part of future breeding plans, so not an issue.) They were delicious.
And I got a nice normal one from Mystique today.
Maybe I have a broody in the making? They are all arguing over their favorite nest boxes - and Polly the hatchery NH is VERY serious and likes to sit tight and long, so she gets no respect...
