The yard has definitely quieted down so they must've worked out their differences. Ozzy is still spending a lot of time in his pen, but I've also noticed the Heisenberg seems to be falling lower and lower in the ranks overall. I think he's just too nice....a lover and not a fighter. He's not my biggest rooster, but he's one of the most solid and with the largest spurs...and no desire to use those assets to his advantage. He's still protective and caring of his girls, but that's the only time I clearly see him come out the winner.

Glad I didn;t step on any toes.. kind of a fine line between saying something is normal, do not worry about it too much or letting the person figure it out plus every one has their own opinion on what's acceptable or not.

Flock dynamics can be interesting.. as you're noticing not all roosters are the same.. contrary to common belief.

Do they molt? How far north can these be kept outside year round?

When I say do they molt, of course they don't loose feathers, but thinking more along the lines of do they stop laying and go through some of the other things that they may do in a molt.

Definitely interesting. I thought my boys had gotten past their battling and then Ozzy began attacking his father AGAIN. After twenty minutes of non-stop fighting and chasing, and Ozzy losing yet another chunk of his comb...not that it phased him in the least...I finally scooped the boy up and put him in isolation. I think I'm just going to have to cull him, as much as I don't want to. He's beautiful, meaty, and other than having daddy issues a pretty decent young cockerel....but his relentless obsession with fighting Heisenberg is probably going to lead to the rooster's death at this rate. Both Shiloh and Hansel intervened and literally knocked Ozzy on his ***, but the cockerel just got up and continued his pursuit of Heisenberg. Since everybody free-ranges together I really can't keep them in separate areas so....dinner.

I have found that "dinner" is pretty good in these situations. Best to go on and get him out of the way if you think he will just keep getting more aggressive.

I have to confess to being a total wuss about culling cockerels I actually like. He slept in an x-large dog kennel last night, and this morning I moved him back into the bachelor pad. There are at least four other extra cockerels/roosters I'd still prefer to butcher before Ozzy, so I'm making excuses for putting off the task.

I had a thought last night....since Heisenberg used to be on the top of the pecking order and now is clearly on the bottom with even his own son beating on him, is there any chance that there could be something physically wrong with him that other chickens can detect, but we humans can't until symptoms become really blatantly obvious? (See...I'm trying to think like a chicken, LOL!

If I remember Heisenberg isn't very old, less then 2 right? If that is the case I would strongly suspect that is the case, he isn't old enough yet to "lose his crown" just b/c of age.

I just harvested 4 crowers. 3 were not nn, they were eggs I had got from others for broody moms while I was having fertility issues w/ Shakespear. Everytime I harvest non nn it amazes me that anyone (who harvests meat) keeps any other chicken then NN.

when my roos started to fight I didn't know that 1 was sick. he showed it later. so keep watching and good luck.

Completely understandable. Still don't like culling, which makes it harder when there is something good about a cockerel but.....

Fights happen without there being a health issue at all.

You said Heisenberg is a nice/mellow roo that is willing to let things be, right? Those are often the first targets of cockerels or other roosters that are feeling the desire to change their ranking.

Example, if he just postures and walks away instead of gives a good bop on the head, the "aggressor" can get bolder and bolder.. in his mind he is somehow pushing the rooster off.. it's feeding his instinct to go into a fight. Might still happen or might not still happen had the dominant rooster been more physical in his dominance every time.

Isn't Ozzy an cross? Often people think good things come out of crosses- vigor, production, etc... however negative traits can show up. It may be the cross giving him a dash of 'fight'. Maybe the australorp line has intolerant roosters and it;s showing up in him...

One other option? breed him asap then cull? Keep the daughters to stay away from potential fighty roos.
