That's because the hen determines the sex of the chick.

My thinking though is maybe they'll like the new rooster better and give him some daughters! Ha hex just wishful thinking.

It's how sex linked matings work in chickens- have the dominant sex linked gene in the hens and the roosters lacking it.

Example, black rooster bred with barred hens will give you barred cockerels, non-barred pullets. That is because the hens can only give the "X" gene to sons.. all daughters get the "Y" gene- which lacks the exact location for the sex linked gene.

the sex chromosomes are not exactly the same as in mammals.. so they are designated ZZ, ZW for this reason.. but the basics of how it works is basically the same, just reveresed in the sexes.

Down to 18 babies. Way more cockerels kept than I really need.

This year is looking like the year for cockerels. I'm getting about 3/4 to 1/4 cockerel to pullet ratio. Haven't say down and done the math though just guesstimating.

I have been getting more boys this year too. I have pipping and popping going on tonight. One is out. Guess who is broody????? Miss Phyllis!!!!! All "puffed" out w/ her imaginary feathers.

I have 3 chicks only. 1 boy, 1 girl and 1 probably a girl, still too young to tell. 1 chick died, I think was a boy. my girls are not interested to become broody, so no more chicks at the moment.

I might be the only person on the planet that feels this way, but I HATE MY BRINSEA. I saved for sure 12, 4 more are in critical condition in ICU

they are full siblings so I will have to separate them when they grow up.
