Naked Neck/Turken Thread

OK, I am in hell.

Well, ok, that's an over statement. Well, ok, a SERIOUS overstatement. But still...

I have five males from the Aloha Naked Neck eggs that are really getting to the culling age (12 weeks). I originally was going to keep none (only so much room for roosters here), then I thought, maybe I'll keep one. And THEY ARE ALL SO PRETTY!!!!!

Most likely keeper is this boy, whom I call Rocky, because he is less likely to be full brother to the two pullets.

This is another nice looking boy, but is probably full brother (also Nn).

@DesertChic , you will not be at all surprised to know that the tiniest boy (the one I would never choose to keep) is the friendly, curious, cute puppy-like one. I have not encouraged this or cuddled him, but still...

Even this boy, the only fully feathered one. A bit of a jerk, but I find him really lovely.

I WANT TO KEEP THEM ALL!!!!

I feel you. It's how I've wound up with far more roosters than I need and a lot of balding hens/pullets as a result. And my last hatch....well, lets just say that getting help from my hubby in taking care of them has resulted in him labeling three as "absolute keeps", and all three are cockerels. *Sigh*

I hatched a scaleless! I guess the naked neck gene cleans it up, and they didn't get it, because OH MY GOODNESS look at their beard + stache combo. My husband took one look at them and said "Name it Grandpa." Two eggs have hatched so far, this one and a non-nn fluffy chick. I think both are probably Marshmallow's kids since they have the rose combs!

But seriously look how hilarious oh my goodness you're like a little benjamin button, you were born old

Congrats, she looks like Phyllis!

@Kassaundra, since we are talking about her, how is Phyllis going on? I mean, is she still broody and how is it going for her?

We have Phyllis No2. Hillarious

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with her younger day photos! Did Phyllis hatch with a beardstache that she lost over time, or did she keep it? Either way would make me pretty happy.

Oh, wow - congratulations! I agree on the name Grandpa!

(I have a Speckled Sussex pullet who is very very spotty (a good thing for my goals), and the top of her head is nearly white, even at this young age. Her name is Grandma...

(You could also call him "Opa"!

That is a really cute name!! I miss my speckled sussex.. they're so sweet and chatty, I would have loved to cross her with my naked necks. I'm a little torn between Grandpa and Benjamin, and will probably go with Benjamin just because the neighbor already looks at me funny when he hears me call my EE hen by her name (Boyfriend.) That and he might think I'm making fun of him LMAO

Maybe a couple cats?

Ok I'm starting to get the magnitude of this problem. If it's under concrete and you can see the holes can you use the spray foam insulation that expands? It's super sticky so don't get it on you. Once dry it's like styofoam If they are coming and going from holes with no other way in that might work.

Or how about smoke any way to get it under walk. Friend of mine hooked up the exhaust of his mower and pumped it into tunnels. Don't know about the safety of that as I've never tried it.

Can you build a box with hole large enough for rats only to enter. Then set traps inside.

How about that electric box some one mentioned a while back.

Just thinking out loud on all of this so none may work. With that many rats it seem a person would be battling constantly.

Would a gravel walk work better than a concrete walk. Without the support of the concrete it would not be so inviting.

I feed about 4-5 cats but they are small to help with rats.

I might try the exhaust pipe as my car is near the first hole. I already made some trap with 2 pvc pipes and a box but these rats are so wicked, they simply avoid traps.

I bought my property 2 yrs ago and it already had concrete walks. I cannot break them now. as for insulation foam, rats can bite it. it would be waste of time and money.

Yea. I thought about the amount of foam you would have to use. When it's wet it would kill them. It's really sticky worse than a shrinked wrapped chick. They'd have to chew a long way before getting out maybe it would suffocate them. Don't affixiate yourself with the car.

I hate sneaky rats. I ended up shooting one with a pellet gun.
